Un procédé d'impression d'image sur du cuir naturel comprend les étapes consistant à : i) appliquer une composition de revêtement de base sur une surface en croute de cuir, la composition de revêtement de base comprenant de l'eau, un pigment coloré et un liant qui est un polyacrylate, un polyuréthane, un polyamide ou un polybutadiène, de manière à former une couche de revêtement de base ; ii) appliquer un liquide de prétraitement sur au moins une partie de la couche de revêtement de base, le liquide de prétraitement comprenant de l'eau, un agent fixateur qui est un sel métallique multivalent ou un polymère cationique, un liant qui est un polyacrylate, un polyamide, un polyester, un polybutadiène ou un polyuréthane, de manière à former une couche de prétraitement ; et iii) imprimer par jet d'encre une image sur la couche de prétraitement à l'aide d'une encre jet d'encre aqueuse comprenant un pigment et un solvant organique soluble dans l'eau. L'invention concerne également un substrat en cuir naturel recevant une image.
