Abstract

In a furnace the pressure P1 at the end of a zone B (a firing zone) and the pressure P2 at the beginning of an adjacent zone K (a cooling zone) are measured. These measured pressures are used to control an extractor 20, 24, 26 (located in the vicinity of the point at which the second pressure is measured) and so the pressure at the beginning of the zone K. When the ratio P1:P2 is less than 1 valve 26 is opened up by motor 24 to reduce the value of P2. When the ratio P1:P2 is greater than 1 the valve 26 is shut down by motor 24. A second extractor 38, 40, 42 may be provided. The measured pressures are fed to a computer 18 which in turn controls the extraction. Gas is supplied to the furnace by a supplier 28, 30, 32 remote from the point at which P2 is measured, and is controlled in accordance with signal from a temperature sensor 34.
