Metodos de obtencion de un combustible Campo tecnico
Esta invencion se refiere a materiales fibrosos y a composiciones.
Antecedentes
Los materiales fibrosos, p.ej., materiales celulosicos y lignocelulosicos, se producen, procesan y usan en grandes cantidades en varias aplicaciones. A menudo tales materiales fibrosos se usan una vez, y despues se descartan como desecho.
Se han descrito diversos materiales fibrosos, sus usos y aplicaciones en las patentes de EE.UU. Nos. 6.448.307, 6.258.876, 6.207.729, 5.973.035 y 5.952.105.
La patente de EE.UU. 4.237.226 describe un procedimiento para tratar sustancias celulosicas antes de hidrolisis que conduce a acortar el tiempo de hidrolisis y a aumentar el rendimiento de azucar.

Cualquiera de los materiales fibrosos descritos en la presente memoria, incluyendo cualquiera de los materiales fibrosos preparados por cualquiera de los metodos descritos en la presente memoria, puede ser combinado con bacterias y/o una o mas enzimas para producir un combustible (p.ej. etanol, un hidrocarburo o hidrogeno).
Los metodos para preparar materiales fibrosos comprenden cizallar una fuente de fibra para proporcionar un primer material fibroso, y hacer pasar el primer material fibroso a traves de una primera criba que tiene un tamano de abertura medio de aproximadamente 1,59 mm o menos (1/16 de pulgada, 0,0625 pulgadas) para proporcionar un segundo material fibroso. La fuente de fibra puede ser, p.ej., cortada en trozos o tiras de material similar al confeti antes del cizallamiento.
En algunas realizaciones, el tamano de abertura medio de la primera criba es menos que 0,79 mm (1/32 de pulgada, 0,03125 pulgadas), p.ej., menos que 0,40 mm (1/64 de pulgada, 0,015625 pulgadas), menos que 0,20 mm (1/128 de pulgada, 0,0078125 pulgadas), o incluso menos que 0,10 mm (1/256 de pulgada, 0,00390625 pulgadas).

El segundo material fibroso puede ser, p.ej., recogido en un contenedor que tiene una presion por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal, p.ej., al menos 10 por ciento por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal, al menos 50 por ciento por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal, o al menos 75 por ciento por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal.
El segundo material fibroso puede ser, p.ej., cizallado una vez o numerosas veces, p.ej., dos veces, tres veces, o incluso mas, p.ej., diez veces. El cizallamiento puede “abrir” y/o “tensar” los materiales fibrosos, haciendo a los materiales mas dispersables, p.ej., en una disolucion o en una resina.
El segundo material fibroso puede ser, p.ej., cizallado, y el material fibroso resultante ser hecho pasar a traves de la primera criba.
El segundo material fibroso puede ser cizallado, y el material fibroso resultante ser hecho pasar a traves de una segunda criba que tiene un tamano de abertura medio menor que la primera criba, proporcionando un tercer material fibroso.
Una relacion de una relacion longitud a diametro media del segundo material fibroso a una relacion longitud a diametro media del tercer material fibroso puede ser, p.ej., menos que 1,5, menos que 1,4, menos que 1,25, o incluso menos que 1,1.
El segundo material fibroso puede ser, p.ej., hecho pasar a traves de una segunda criba que tiene un tamano de abertura medio menor que la primera criba.
El cizallamiento y paso pueden ser realizados, p.ej., al mismo tiempo.
El segundo material fibroso puede tener una relacion longitud a diametro media mayor que, p.ej., 10/1, mayor que 25/1, o incluso mayor que 50/1.
Por ejemplo, una longitud media del segundo material fibroso puede estar entre 0,5 mm y 2,5 mm, p.ej., entre 0,75 mm y 1,0 mm. Por ejemplo, una anchura media del segundo material fibroso puede estar entre 5 pm y 50 pm, p.ej., entre 10 pm y 30 pm.
Una desviacion estandar de una longitud del segundo material fibroso puede ser menos que 60 por ciento de una longitud media del segundo material fibroso, p.ej., menos que 50 por ciento de una longitud media del segundo material fibroso.
En algunas realizaciones, un area superficial BET del segundo material fibroso es mayor que 0,5 m2/g, p.ej. mayor que 1,0 m2/g, mayor que 1,5 m2/g, mayor que 1,75 m2/g, mayor que 2,5 m2/g, mayor que 10,0 m2/g, mayor que 25,0 m2/g, mayor que 50,0 m2/g, o incluso mayor que 100,0 m2/g.
En algunas realizaciones, una porosidad del segundo material fibroso es mayor que 25 por ciento, p.ej., mayor que 50 por ciento, mayor que 75 por ciento, mayor que 85 por ciento, mayor que 90 por ciento, mayor que 92 por ciento, mayor que 95 por ciento, o incluso mayor que 99 por ciento.
En realizaciones espedficas, la criba esta formada por monofilamentos entretejidos.
La fuente de fibra puede incluir, p.ej., un material celulosico, un material lignocelulosico.
En algunas realizaciones, la fuente de fibra incluye una mezcla de fibras, p.ej., fibras derivadas de una fuente de papel y fibras derivadas de una fuente textil, p.ej., algodon.
En otro aspecto, la invencion presenta materiales fibrosos que tienen una relacion longitud a diametro media mayor que 5, y que tienen una desviacion estandar de una longitud de fibra menor que sesenta por ciento de una longitud de fibra media.
Por ejemplo, la relacion longitud a diametro media puede ser mayor que 10/1, p.ej., mayor que 15/1, mayor que 25/1, mayor que 35/1, mayor que 45/1, o incluso mayor que 50/1.
Por ejemplo, la longitud media puede estar entre 0,5 mm y 2,5 mm.
La invencion presenta metodos para preparar un combustible. glutarico, acido oleico, acido linoleico, acido glicolico, acido lactico, acido Y-hidroxibuffrico, o mezclas de estos acidos; y el hidrocarburo puede ser, p.ej., metano, etano, propano, isobuteno, pentano, n-hexano, o mezclas de estos hidrocarburos.
Antes de la combinacion con la bacteria y/o enzima, cualquiera de los materiales fibrosos descritos en la presente memoria puede ser hidrolizado para romper los carbohidratos de peso molecular mas alto en carbohidratos de peso molecular mas bajo.
El termino “material fibroso”, como se emplea en la presente memoria, es un material que incluye numerosas fibras sueltas, discretas y separables. Por ejemplo, se puede preparar un material fibroso a partir de una fuente de fibra de papel polirrevestido o de un papel Kraft blanqueado por cizallamiento con, p.ej., una cortadora de cuchillas rotatorias.
El termino “criba”, como se emplea en la presente memoria, significa un miembro capaz de tamizar material segun el tamano, p.ej., una placa perforada, cilindro o similar, o una malla de alambre o tela.
Realizaciones y/o aspectos pueden tener una cualquiera de, o combinaciones de, las siguientes ventajas. Los materiales fibrosos son abiertos o tensados, haciendo a los materiales mas dispersables, p.ej., en una disolucion o en una resina, y haciendolos mas susceptibles al ataque qmmico, enzimatico o biologico. Los materiales fibrosos pueden tener, p.ej., una distribucion de longitudes y/o relaciones longitud a diametro relativamente estrecha, de tal modo que sus propiedades son definidas consistentemente.
Otros rasgos y ventajas de la invencion seran evidentes a partir de la siguiente descripcion detallada, y de las reivindicaciones.

El material fibroso fue cizallado dos veces en una cortadora de cuchillas rotatorias utilizando una criba con aberturas de 1,59 mm (1/16 de pulgada) durante cada cizallamiento.
Las Figs. 17 y 18 son micrograffas electronicas de barrido de un material fibroso producido a partir de carton Kraft blanqueado a un aumento de 25 X y un aumento de 1.000 X, respectivamente. El material fibroso fue cizallado tres veces en una cortadora de cuchillas rotatorias. Durante el primer cizallamiento, se uso una criba de (1/8 de pulgada); durante el segundo cizallamiento, se uso una criba de 1,59 mm (1/16 de pulgada), y durante el tercer cizallamiento se uso una criba de 0,79 mm (1/32 de pulgada).
La Fig. 19 es un diagrama de bloques que ilustra la densificacion aparente reversible de una composicion de material fibroso.
Descripcion detallada
Haciendo referencia a la Fig. 1, una fuente 10 de fibra es cizallada, p.ej., en una cortadora de cuchillas rotatorias, para proporcionar un primer material 12 fibroso. El primer material 12 fibroso se hace pasar a traves de una primera criba 16 que tiene un tamano de abertura medio de 1,59 mm o menos (1/16 de pulgada, 0,0625 pulgadas) para proporcionar un segundo material 14 fibroso. Si se desea, la fuente 10 de fibra puede ser cortada antes del cizallamiento, p.ej., con una trituradora. Por ejemplo, cuando se usa un papel como fuente 10 de fibra, el papel

puede ser cortado primero en tiras que son, p.ej., de 6,35 mm a 12,7 mm (1/4 a 1/2 de pulgada) de ancho, usando una trituradora, p.ej., una trituradora de torniNo contrarrotatorio, tal como las fabricadas por Munson (Utica, N.Y.). Como alternativa a la trituracion, el papel puede ser reducido en tamano cortando hasta un tamano deseado usando una cortadora de guillotina. Por ejemplo, la cortadora de guillotina se puede usar para cortar el papel en laminas que son, p.ej., de 25,4 centfmetros (l0 pulgadas) de ancho por 30,48 centfmetros (12 pulgadas) de largo.
En algunas realizaciones, el cizallamiento de la fuente 10 de fibra y el paso del primer material 12 fibroso resultante a traves de la primera criba 16 se realizan al mismo tiempo. El cizallamiento y el paso tambien se pueden realizar en un procedimiento de tipo discontinuo.
Por ejemplo, se puede usar una cortadora de cuchillas rotatorias para triturar al mismo tiempo la fuente 10 de fibra y cribar el primer material 12 fibroso. Haciendo referencia a la Fig. 2, una cortadora 20 de cuchillas rotatorias incluye una tolva 22 que puede ser cargada con una fuente 10' de fibra triturada preparada triturando la fuente 10 de fibra. La fuente 10' de fibra triturada es cizallada entre cuchillas 24 estacionarias y cuchillas 26 rotatorias para proporcionar un primer material 12 fibroso. El primer material 12 fibroso pasa a traves de la criba 16 que tiene las dimensiones descritas anteriormente, y el segundo material 14 fibroso resultante es capturado en el contenedor 30. Para ayudar a la recogida del segundo material 14 fibroso, el contenedor 30 puede tener una presion por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal, p.ej., al menos 10 por ciento por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal, p.ej., al menos 25 por ciento por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal, p.ej., al menos 50 por ciento por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal, o al menos 75 por ciento por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal. En algunas realizaciones, se utiliza una fuente 50 de vado (Fig. 2) para mantener el contenedor por debajo de la presion atmosferica nominal.
El cizallamiento puede ser ventajoso para “abrir” y “tensar” los materiales fibrosos, hacer a los materiales mas dispersables, p.ej., en una disolucion o en una resina, y hacerlos mas susceptibles al ataque qrnmico, enzimatico o biologico. Sin desear estar atado por ninguna teona particular, se cree, al menos en algunas realizaciones, que el cizallamiento puede funcionalizar las superficies de la fibra con grupos funcionales, tales como grupos hidroxilo o acido carboxflico, que pueden, p.ej., ayudar a dispersar las fibras en una resina fundida o potenciar el ataque qrnmico o biologico.
La fuente de fibra puede ser cizallada en un estado seco, un estado hidratado (p.ej., teniendo hasta diez por ciento en peso de agua absorbida), o en un estado humedo, p.ej., teniendo entre aproximadamente 10 por ciento y aproximadamente 75 por ciento en peso de agua. La fuente de fibra puede ser cizallada incluso mientras esta parcialmente o totalmente sumergida en un lfquido, tal como agua, etanol, isopropanol.
La fuente de fibra tambien puede ser cizallada bajo un gas (tal como una corriente o atmosfera de un gas distinto al aire), p.ej., oxfgeno o nitrogeno, o vapor.
Si se desea, los materiales fibrosos pueden ser separados, p.ej., de manera continua o en lotes, en fracciones segun su longitud, anchura, densidad, tipo de material, o alguna combinacion de estos atributos. Ademas, p.ej., cuando se preparan composiciones que incluyen bacterias y/o una enzima, es deseable a menudo usar un material sustancialmente unico como materia prima.
Por ejemplo, los materiales ferrosos pueden ser separados de cualquiera de los materiales fibrosos haciendo pasar un material fibroso que incluye un material ferroso por un iman, p.ej., un electroiman, y haciendo pasar despues el material fibroso resultante a traves de una serie de cribas, teniendo cada criba aberturas de diferentes tamanos.
Los materiales fibrosos tambien pueden ser separados, p.ej., usando un gas a alta velocidad, p.ej., aire. En tal estrategia, los materiales fibrosos son separados extrayendo diferentes fracciones, que pueden ser caracterizadas fotonicamente, si se desea. Tal aparato de separacion se discute en Lindsey et al, patente de EE.UU. N° 6.883.667.
Los materiales fibrosos se pueden usar inmediatamente despues de su preparacion, o se pueden secar, p.ej., a aproximadamente 105°C durante 4-18 horas, para que el contenido de humedad sea, p.ej., menos que aproximadamente 0,5% antes del uso.
Si se desea, se puede retirar la lignina de cualquiera de los materiales fibrosos que incluyen lignina, tales como materiales lignocelulosicos. El material fibroso es esterilizado para matar cualesquiera microorganismos que puedan estar sobre el material fibroso. El material fibroso es esterilizado exponiendo el material fibroso a una radiacion ionizante, tal como radiacion gamma.
Haciendo referencia a las Figs. 3-8, en algunas realizaciones, el tamano de abertura medio de la primera criba 16 es menos que 0,79 mm (1/32 de pulgada, 0,03125 pulgadas), p.ej., menos que 0,51 mm (1/50 de pulgada, 0,02000 pulgadas), menos que 0,40 mm (1/64 de pulgada, 0,015625 pulgadas), menos que 0,23 mm (0,009 pulgadas), menos que 0,20 mm (1/128 de pulgada, 0,0078125 pulgadas), menos que 0,18 mm (0,007 pulgadas), menos que 0,13 mm (0,005 pulgadas), o incluso menos que 0,10 mm (1/256 de pulgada, 0,00390625 pulgadas). La criba 16 se prepara entretejiendo monofilamentos 52 que tienen un diametro apropiado para dar el tamano de abertura deseado. Por ejemplo, los monofilamentos pueden estar hechos de un metal, p.ej., acero inoxidable. Segun se hacen mas pequenos los tamanos de abertura, las exigencias estructurales de los monofilamentos pueden aumentar. Por

ejemplo, para tamanos de abertura menores que 0,40 mm, puede ser ventajoso preparar las cribas a partir de monofilamentos hechos de un material distinto al acero inoxidable, p.ej., titanio, aleaciones de titanio, metales amorfos, mquel, wolframio, rodio, renio, ceramica o vidrio. En algunas realizaciones, la criba se prepara a partir de una placa, p.ej., una placa metalica, que tiene aberturas, p.ej., cortadas en la placa usando un laser.
En algunas realizaciones, el segundo material 14 fibroso es cizallado y hecho pasar a traves de la primera criba 16, o una criba de tamano diferente. En algunas realizaciones, el segundo material 14 fibroso es hecho pasar a traves de una segunda criba que tiene un tamano de abertura medio igual a o menor que el de la primera criba 16.
Haciendo referencia a la Fig. 9, se puede preparar un tercer material 62 fibroso a partir del segundo material 14 fibroso cizallando el segundo material 14 fibroso y haciendo pasar el material resultante a traves de una segunda criba 60 que tiene un tamano de abertura medio menor que la primera criba 16.
Las fuentes de fibra incluyen fuentes de fibra celulosicas, que incluyen papel y productos de papel como los mostrados en las Figs. 10a (papel polirrevestido) y 10B (papel Kraft), y fuentes de fibra lignocelulosicas, que incluyen madera y materiales relacionados con la madera, p.ej., tabla de aglomerado. Otras fuentes de fibra adecuadas incluyen fuentes de fibra naturales, p.ej., hierbas, cascaras de arroz, bagazo, algodon, yute, heno, lino, bambu, sisal, abaca, paja, mazorcas de mafz, cascaras de arroz, pelo de coco; fuentes de fibra de alto contenido en a-celulosa, p.ej., algodon; fuentes de fibra sinteticas, p.ej., hilo extruido (hilo orientado o hilo no orientado) o fuentes de fibra de carbono; fuentes de fibra inorganicas; y fuentes de fibra metalicas. Las fuentes de fibra naturales o sinteticas se pueden obtener a partir de materiales textiles de desecho vfrgenes, p.ej., retales, o pueden ser desechos post-consumidor, p.ej., trapos. Cuando se usan productos de papel como fuentes de fibra, pueden ser materiales vfrgenes, p.ej., materiales de desecho vfrgenes, o pueden ser desechos post-consumidor. Aparte de materias primas vfrgenes, tambien se pueden usar como fuentes de fibra desechos post-consumidor, industriales (p.ej., vfsceras), y de procesamiento (p.ej., efluente del procesamiento de papel). Tambien, la fuente de fibra puede obtenerse o derivarse de desechos humanos (p.ej., aguas residuales), animales o vegetales. Se han descrito fuentes de fibra adicionales en las patentes de EE.UU. Nos. 6.448.307, 6.258.876, 6.207.729, 5.973.035 y 5.952.105.
Se pueden usar mezclas de cualquiera de las fuentes de fibra anteriores.
De manera general, las fibras de los materiales fibrosos pueden tener una relacion longitud a diametro media relativamente grande (p.ej., mayor que 20 a 1), incluso si han sido cizalladas mas de una vez. Ademas, las fibras de los materiales fibrosos descritos en la presente memoria pueden tener una distribucion de longitudes y/o relaciones longitud a diametro relativamente estrecha.
Como se emplean en la presente memoria, las anchuras (es decir, diametros) de fibra medias son las determinadas opticamente seleccionando al azar aproximadamente 5.000 fibras. Las longitudes de fibra medias son longitudes ponderadas en longitud corregida. Las areas superficiales BET (Brunauer, Emmet y Teller) son areas superficiales de multipunto, y las porosidades son las determinadas por porosimetna de mercurio.
La relacion longitud a diametro media del segundo material 14 fibroso puede ser, p.ej., mayor que 8/1, p.ej., mayor que 10/1, mayor que 15/1, mayor que 20/1, mayor que 25/1, o mayor que 50/1. Una longitud media del segundo material 14 fibroso puede estar, p.ej., entre aproximadamente 0,5 mm y 2,5 mm, p.ej., entre aproximadamente 0,75 mm y 1,0 mm, y una anchura (es decir, diametro) media del segundo material 14 fibroso puede estar, p.ej., entre aproximadamente 5 pm y 50 pm, p.ej., entre aproximadamente 10 pm y 30 pm.
En algunas realizaciones, una desviacion estandar de la longitud del segundo material 14 fibroso es menos que 60 por ciento de una longitud media del segundo material 14 fibroso, p.ej., menos que 50 por ciento de la longitud media, menos que 40 por ciento de la longitud media, menos que 25 por ciento de la longitud media, menos que 10 por ciento de la longitud media, menos que 5 por ciento de la longitud media, o incluso menos que 1 por ciento de la longitud media.

Una porosidad del segundo material 14 fibroso puede ser, p.ej., mayor que 20 por ciento, mayor que 25 por ciento, mayor que 35 por ciento, mayor que 50 por ciento, mayor que 60 por ciento, mayor que 70 por ciento, mayor que 80 por ciento, mayor que 85 por ciento, mayor que 90 por ciento, mayor que 92 por ciento, mayor que 94 por ciento, mayor que 95 por ciento, mayor que 97,5 por ciento, mayor que 99 por ciento, o incluso mayor que 99,5 por ciento.
En algunas realizaciones, una relacion de la relacion longitud a diametro media del primer material 12 fibroso a la relacion longitud a diametro media del segundo material 14 fibroso es, p.ej., menos que 1,5, p.ej., menos que 1,4, menos que 1,25, menos que 1,1, menos que 1,075, menos que 1,05, menos que 1,025, o incluso sustancialmente igual a 1.

En algunas realizaciones, el tercer material 62 fibroso es hecho pasar a traves de una tercera criba para producir un cuarto material fibroso. El cuarto material fibroso puede ser, p.ej., hecho pasar a traves de una cuarta criba para producir un quinto material. Se pueden repetir procedimientos de cribado similares tantas veces como se desee para producir el material fibroso deseado que tenga las propiedades deseadas.
En algunas realizaciones, el material fibroso deseado incluye fibras que tienen una relacion longitud a diametro media mayor que 5 y que tienen una desviacion estandar de la longitud de fibra que es menos que sesenta por ciento de la longitud media. Por ejemplo, la relacion longitud a diametro media puede ser mayor que 10/1, p.ej., mayor que 25/1, o mayor que 50/1, y la longitud media puede estar entre aproximadamente 0,5 mm y 2,5 mm, p.ej., entre aproximadamente 0,75 mm y 1,0 mm. Una anchura media del material fibroso puede estar entre aproximadamente 5 pm y 50 pm, p.ej., entre aproximadamente 10 pm y 30 pm. Un material deseado puede tener, p.ej., una porosidad mayor que 70 por ciento, p.ej., mayor que 80 por ciento, mayor que 87,5 por ciento, mayor que 90 por ciento, mayor que 92,5 por ciento, mayor que 95, mayor que 97,5, incluso mayor que 99 por ciento. Una realizacion particularmente preferida tiene un area superficial bEt mayor que 1,25 m2/g y una porosidad mayor que 85 por ciento.
Ejemplos
Las micrograffas electronicas de barrido se obtuvieron en un microscopio electronico de barrido de emision de campo JEOL 65000. Las longitudes y anchuras (es decir, diametros) de fibra fueron determinadas por Integrated Paper Services, Inc., Appleton, WI, usando un analizador automatizado (TAPPI T271). El area superficial BET fue determinada por Micromeritics Analytical Services, como lo fueron la porosidad y la densidad aparente.
Ejemplo 1 - Preparacion de material fibroso cizallado dos veces a partir de carton Kraft blanqueado
Se obtuvo de International Paper un pale de 680 kg (1.500 libras) de carton blanco Kraft blanqueado virgen que tema una densidad aparente de 0,48 g/cm3 (30 lb/ft3). Se corto el material en trozos de 209,6 mm (8 1/4 pulgadas) por 279,4 mm (11 pulgadas) usando una cortadora de guillotina, y se alimento a una cortadora de cuchillas rotatorias Munson, Modelo SC30. La criba de descarga tema aberturas de 1,59 mm (1/16 de pulgada). El espacio entre las cuchillas rotatorias y fijas se ajusto a aproximadamente 0,51 mm (0,020 pulgadas). La cortadora de cuchillas rotatorias corto los trozos similares a confeti, liberando un material fibroso a una velocidad de aproximadamente 0,453 kg (una libra) por hora. El material que resulto del primer cizallamiento fue alimentado de vuelta a la misma configuracion descrita anteriormente y cizallado de nuevo. El material fibroso resultante tuvo un area superficial BET de 1,4408 m2/g +/- 0,0156 m2/g, una porosidad de 90,8998 por ciento y una densidad aparente (a 3,65 kPa (@0,53 psia)) de 0,1298 g/ml. Una longitud media de las fibras fue 0,891 mm y una anchura media de las fibras fue 0,026 mm, dando una L/D media de 34:1. Se muestran micrograffas electronicas de barrido del material fibroso en las Figs. 15 y 16 a un aumento de 25 X y un aumento de 1.000 X, respectivamente.
Otras composiciones y usos de los materiales fibrosos
Si se desea, se puede retirar la lignina de cualquiera de los materiales fibrosos que incluyen lignina, tales como materiales lignocelulosicos. Tambien, si se desea, el material fibroso puede ser esterilizado para matar cualesquiera microorganismos que puedan estar sobre el material fibroso. Por ejemplo, el material fibroso puede ser esterilizado exponiendo el material fibroso a radiacion, tal como radiacion infrarroja, radiacion ultravioleta, o una radiacion ionizante, tal como radiacion gamma. Los materiales fibrosos tambien pueden ser esterilizados calentando el material fibroso bajo condiciones y durante un tiempo suficiente para matar cualesquiera microorganismos, o empleando un esterilizante qmmico, tal como lejfa (p.ej., hipoclorito de sodio), clorhexidina u oxido de etileno.
Cualquiera de los materiales fibrosos puede ser lavado, p.ej., con un ffquido tal como agua, para retirar cualesquiera impurezas y/o contaminantes indeseables.
En una aplicacion espedfica, los materiales fibrosos se pueden usar como materia prima para diversos microorganismos, tales como levaduras y bacterias, que pueden fermentar o actuar de otro modo sobre los materiales fibrosos para producir un combustible, p.ej., un alcohol, un acido organico, un hidrocarburo o hidrogeno.
El alcohol producido puede ser un alcohol monohidroxi, p.ej., etanol, o un alcohol polihidroxi, p.ej., etilenglicol o glicerina. Ejemplos de alcoholes que se pueden producir incluyen metanol, etanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, etilenglicol, propilenglicol, 1,4-butanodiol, glicerina, o mezclas de estos alcoholes. El acido organico producido puede

ser un acido monocarboxflico o un acido policarbox^lico. Ejemplos de acidos organicos incluyen acido formico, acido acetico, acido propionico, acido butrnco, acido valerico, acido caproico, acido palmttico, acido estearico, acido oxalico, acido malonico, acido succmico, acido glutarico, acido oleico, acido linoleico, acido glicolico, acido lactico, acido Y-hidroxibutmco o mezclas de estos acidos. El hidrocarburo producido puede ser, p.ej., un alcano o un alqueno. Ejemplos de hidrocarburos que se pueden producir incluyen metano, etano, propano, isobuteno, pentano, n-hexano o mezclas de estos hidrocarburos.
Una fuente de fibra que incluye una fuente de fibra celulosica y/o lignocelulosica se cizalla para proporcionar un primer material fibroso. Despues el primer material fibroso se hace pasar a traves de una primera criba que tiene un tamano de abertura medio de aproximadamente 1,59 mm o menos (1/16 de pulgada, 0,0625 pulgadas) para proporcionar un segundo material fibroso. El segundo material fibroso es combinado con una bacteria y/o enzima, en esta realizacion particular, la bacteria y/o enzima es capaz de utilizar el segundo material fibroso directamente sin pretratamiento para producir un combustible que incluye hidrogeno, un alcohol, un acido organico y/o un hidrocarburo.
Antes de la combinacion con la bacteria y/o enzima, el material fibroso es esterilizado para matar cualesquiera microorganismos que puedan estar sobre el material fibroso. El material fibroso es esterilizado exponiendo el material fibroso a una radiacion ionizante, tal como radiacion gamma.
En una realizacion particular el material celulosico y/o lignocelulosico del material fibroso es descompuesto primero en azucares de peso molecular mas bajo, que son anadidos despues a una disolucion de levaduras y/o bacterias que fermentan los azucares de peso molecular mas bajo para producir etanol. El material celulosico y/o lignocelulosico puede ser descompuesto usando productos qmmicos, tales como acidos o bases, mediante enzimas, o mediante una combinacion de los dos. La hidrolisis qmmica de materiales celulosicos es descrita por Bjerre, en Biotechnol. Bioeng., 49:568 (1996) y Kim en Biotechnol. Prog., 18:489 (2002).

Haciendo referencia ahora a la Fig. 19, un material fibroso que tiene una baja densidad aparente puede ser combinado con un microorganismo, p.ej., levaduras o bacterias liofilizados, y/o una enzima, y despues ser densificado de manera reversible hasta una composicion de material fibroso que tiene una densidad aparente mas alta. Por ejemplo, una composicion de material fibroso que tiene una densidad aparente de 0,05 g/cm3 puede ser densificada sellando el material fibroso en una estructura relativamente impermeable a los gases, p.ej., una bolsa hecha de polietileno o una bolsa hecha de capas alternantes de polietileno y un nailon, y evacuando despues el gas atrapado, p.ej., aire, de la estructura. Despues de la evacuacion del aire de la estructura, el material fibroso puede tener p.ej., una densidad aparente mayor que 0,3 g/cm3, p.ej., 0,5 g/cm3, 0,6 g/cm3, 0,7 g/cm3 o mas, p.ej., 0,85 g/cm3. Esto puede ser ventajoso cuando es deseable transportar el material fibroso a otra ubicacion, p.ej., una planta de fabricacion remota, donde la composicion de material fibroso puede ser anadida a una disolucion, p.ej., para producir etanol. Despues de perforar la estructura sustancialmente impermeable a los gases, el material fibroso densificado se revierte a casi su densidad aparente inicial, p.ej., mas que 60 por ciento de su densidad aparente inicial, p.ej., 70 por ciento, 80 por ciento, 85 por ciento o mas, p.ej., 95 por ciento de su densidad aparente inicial.     REIVINDICACIONES
    1. Un metodo para preparar un combustible, comprendiendo el metodo: cizallar una fuente (10) de fibra para proporcionar un primer material (12) fibroso;
    hacer pasar el primer material (12) fibroso a traves de una primera criba (16) que tiene un tamano de abertura medio de aproximadamente 1,59 mm o menos (1/16 de pulgada, 0,0625 pulgadas) para proporcionar un segundo material (14) fibroso; y
    combinar el segundo material (14) fibroso con una bacteria y/o enzima, utilizando la bacteria y/o enzima el segundo material (14) fibroso para producir un combustible que comprende hidrogeno, un alcohol, un acido organico y/o un hidrocarburo, y en donde antes de la combinacion con la bacteria y/o enzima el material fibroso ha sido esterilizado exponiendo el material fibroso a una radiacion ionizante.
  2. 2. El metodo de la reivindicacion 1, en donde el alcohol se selecciona del grupo que consiste en metanol, etanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, etilenglicol, propilenglicol, 1,4-butanodiol, glicerina, y mezclas de los mismos.
  3. 3. El metodo de la reivindicacion 1, en donde el acido organico se selecciona del grupo que consiste en acido formico, acido acetico, acido propionico, acido butmco, acido valerico, acido caproico, acido palmttico, acido estearico, acido oxalico, acido malonico, acido succmico, acido glutarico, acido oleico, acido linoleico, acido glicolico, acido lactico, acido Y-hidroxibutmco y mezclas de los mismos.
  4. 4. El metodo de la reivindicacion 1, en donde el hidrocarburo se selecciona del grupo que consiste en metano, etano, propano, isobuteno, pentano, n-hexano y mezclas de los mismos.
  5. 5. El metodo de la reivindicacion 1, en donde el segundo material (14) fibroso tiene un area superficial BET mayor que aproximadamente 0,25 m2/g.
  6. 6. El metodo de la reivindicacion 1, en donde el segundo material (14) fibroso tiene un area superficial BET mayor que aproximadamente 1,25 m2/g.
  7. 7. El metodo de la reivindicacion 1, en donde el segundo material (14) fibroso tiene una porosidad mayor que aproximadamente 85 por ciento.
  8. 8. Un metodo para preparar un combustible, que comprende:
    cizallar una fuente (10) de fibra para proporcionar un primer material (12) fibroso; y
    hacer pasar el primer material (12) fibroso a traves de una primera criba (16) que tiene un tamano de abertura medio de aproximadamente 1,59 mm o menos (1/16 de pulgada, 0,0625 pulgadas) para proporcionar un segundo material (14) fibroso;
    hidrolizar el segundo material (14) fibroso para proporcionar un material hidrolizado; y
    combinar el material hidrolizado con una bacteria y/o enzima, utilizando la bacteria y/o enzima el material hidrolizado para producir un combustible que comprende hidrogeno, un alcohol, un acido organico y/o un hidrocarburo, y en donde antes de la combinacion con la bacteria y/o enzima el material fibroso ha sido esterilizado exponiendo el material fibroso a una radiacion ionizante.
  9. 9. El metodo de una cualquiera de las reivindicaciones 1 a 8, en donde la fuente (10) de fibra comprende un material celulosico o lignocelulosico.
  10. 10. El metodo de una cualquiera de las reivindicaciones 1 a 8, en donde la fuente (10) de fibra se selecciona del grupo que consiste en madera, hierbas, cascaras de arroz, bagazo, algodon, yute, heno, lino, bambu, sisal, abaca, paja, mazorcas de mafz, pelo de coco y papel.
  11. 11. El metodo de una cualquiera de las reivindicaciones 1 a 10, en donde la fuente (10) de fibra se corta antes del cizallamiento.
  12. 12. El metodo de una cualquiera de las reivindicaciones 1 a 11, en donde el cizallamiento se realiza con una cortadora (20) de cuchillas rotatorias.
  13. 13. El metodo de una cualquiera de las reivindicaciones 1 a 12, en donde el segundo material (14) fibroso ha sido cizallado y el material fibroso resultante hecho pasar a traves de la primera criba (16) o a traves de una segunda criba (60) que tiene un tamano de abertura medio menor que la primera criba (16).
  14. 14. El metodo de una cualquiera de las reivindicaciones 1 a 13, en donde la radiacion ionizante es radiacion gamma.
  15. 15. El metodo de la reivindicacion 1, en donde la bacteria y/o enzima es capaz de utilizar el segundo material (14) fibroso sin pretratamiento para producir el combustible.
