Abstract
The glove chamber has an evacuator system and is used for reacting radioactive materials with reactants which result in the formation of nitrated gaseous products. The active charcoal is contained in a cartridge having porous end walls and a heater, e.g. electric, controllable to heat the cartridge to 600 degrees C so that the gaseous products react to form CO and N2. The CO is converted into CO2 by catalytic oxidn. in a second cartridge contg. the catalyst, before being filtered in conventional manner and removed through the evacuator system. The gases leaving the active charcoal cartridge are pref. led into the catalyst cartridge via an injector which draws air from inside the chamber for the oxidising reaction, while the oxidised gases pass through another injector nozzle before entering the filter system. The reactions for the which the chamber can be used are e.g. the dissolution of radioactive materials into nitrated gases. The catalytic oxidn. of the CO produced avoids the use of naked flames in the chamber, which can be undesirable for certain types of reactions.
