Abstract

A soft synthetic leather is made by (1) forming a copolyester from a 2-4C alkylene glycol, terephthalic acid (or alkyl ester) and a third component which has a mol. wt. of not less than a 1000 and which is used is used in such amts. that the condition: mol% x mol. wt. =10,2000 is fulfilled; (2) spinning this copolyester into a fibre; (3) stretching, heat-treating, crimping mechanically and cutting the fibre; (4) forming a needled and opt. heat-treated web from the cut fibres which has the following properties: 0.5-2.5 denier, degree of shrinkage in boiling water less than 5%, Young's modulus after shrinking in boiling water of less than 35 g/d and a density of 0.11-0.35 g/cm3; (5) impregnating the web with a polymerisable binder and coagulating the latter so that a web having a density of 0.3-0.4 g/cm3 is obtd. Due to the low degree that the copolyester shrinks (pref. 0-3%) the synthetic leather has improved handle.
