Description
ディスプレイは、所望の画像を表示するためのイルミネータ制御信号17及びモジュレータ制御信号18を生成するコントローラ19を含む。所望の画像は画像データ11により特徴付けられ、各画素の輝度値(及びもし画像がカラー画像である場合、明度)を直接又は間接的に特定する。画像データ11は任意の適切なフォーマットを有し、任意の適切な色モデルを利用して輝度及び明度を特定する。例えば、画像データ11は、
・各画素の赤、緑及び青(RGB)明度、
・各画素が、輝度として参照される値(Y)と、クロミナンスとして参照される値の組(I,Q)とにより表さされるYIQ値、
・CMY又はCMYK値、
・YUV値、
・YCbCr値、
・HSV値、
・HSL値、
のいずれかを特定する。
L×TMIN≦LIMAGE≦L×TMAX (1)
であることが望ましい。但し、TMINは画素要素の最小の透過性であり、TMAXは画素要素の最大の透過性であり、且つLIMAGEは画像データ11により指定される画素の輝度である。式(1)の関係は、各色のLED12の各画素に対して独立に保たれることが好ましい。
・各色において、近隣のLED26の点像強度分布関数は重なり、
・LED26の各々は最大の出力で動作し、
・各LED26は(任意の単位で1.0として示される)点像強度分布関数のピークの点で同じ強度の光を生成し、
・各色のLED26はイルミネータ25において一様に分布する。
全LED26の最大強度が同じである必要は無い。異なる色のLEDは異なる効率を有する傾向がある。典型的には、赤LEDの効率(所与の電力に対して生成される光量)は緑LEDのものよりも大きい。典型的な赤及び緑LEDは青LEDのものよりも大きな効率を有する。ある点までは、費用をかけるほど任意の利用可能な色のより明るいLEDを取得することができる。ディスプレイを設計する者は、最大の光出力、必要とする電力、費用などのファクタに基づいて適切なLEDを選択する。現在では、フラックス比が3:5:1を有する赤、緑、及び青LEDを提供すると、最もコスト効率が良いということが常識として分かっている。このようなフラックス比では、赤LEDは青LEDよりも3倍明るく、且つ緑LEDは青LEDよりも5倍明るい。
・画像領域は黄色が最大値に達していない。この場合、画像は白画素以外は再生される。白画素は放置される。別例では、白画素はより多くのRGB光を適切に通過させるために解放される。イルミネータの黄LEDはオフ状態であるか又は、白領域におけるRGB色輝度をサポートする範囲のみでオン状態である。
・画像領域における画素の色が最大値に達した黄色によってほぼ占められている。この場合、この領域に対応する赤、緑及び青LEDは実質的にオフ状態か又はわずかであり、黄LEDは明るいレベルのオン状態である。白画素は黄LEDから黄光を変調するために主に利用される。
・画像領域は、幾つかは最大値に達した黄色を表示し、残りは大きな赤、緑又は青成分を有する画素の混合を含む。この場合、イルミネータは全4LED色の光で領域の画素を照射する。モジュレータの白画素要素は、黄光成分が通過することができるように解放される。白画素要素は赤、緑及び青光を通過させることも許可する。結果は、白フィルタを通過するRGB光によりわずかに飽和から減少したほぼ黄領域になる。この飽和からの減少は、黄色になる画素の赤、緑又は青要素を通過する光を低減することにより最小化される。領域の黄部は小さい(又はこれは第二の場合の例である)ために、わずかな飽和からの減少は一般には受け入れ可能である。赤、緑又は青光成分よりもいくらか明るい黄光を有するモジュレータを照射することができる黄光LEDを提供することにより、飽和からの低減がさらに低減される。
・広帯域画素を通過する基本色の光量(この量は基本色と別色とのモジュレータ値67に対するELPから確定される)を減算すること、
・基本色の要素のモジュレータ値を、所望の量に等しい画素において通過する基本色の全光量を得るのに必要とされる(場合)、基本色の追加光を通過させるように選択すること、により決定される。
・本発明に従うディスプレイのイルミネータにおける光源は、LEDである必要は無く、他のタイプの光源であってもよい。
・本発明に従うディスプレイのイルミネータにおける光源は、赤、緑及び青である必要は無く、他色でもよい。
・本発明に従うディスプレイのイルミネータにおける光源は、一つ以上の発光器から作られてもよい。
・イルミネータは、(全色領域を達成したいのであれば、少なくとも三色が必要とされるが、)3より多い又は3未満の異なる色の光源を含んでもよい。
・図1A及び図9の方法のブロックの動作は、あるブロックからの結果が、流れの次に事項されるとして図示されるブロックの動作に必要とされない場合に、部分的に又は完全に異なる順序で実行されてもよい。例えば、基本色のELPは図9のブロック68までは必要とされない。基本色のELPはブロック62とブロック68との間の任意のタイミングで決定され得る。

- 2次元の画素のアレイを備えるディスプレイ用イルミネータのためのコントローラであって、
データプロセッサと、
前記データプロセッサによって実行可能な複数のソフトウェア命令を含むプログラムストアと、
別個の色で独立に制御可能な2次元配置の複数の固体発光器を含む光源層を制御するために用いられる複数の駆動信号を出力するように動作可能なインタフェースエレクトロニクスであって、前記複数の固体発光器のうちの第1組は第1の色の光を照射するように構成され、前記複数の固体発光器のうちの第2組は第2の色の光を照射するように構成され、前記複数の固体発光器のうちの第3組は第3の色の光を照射するように構成され、前記複数の固体発光器の光は、前記複数の駆動信号に応じた強度を有する、前記インタフェースエレクトロニクスと、
前記光源層の複数の固体発光器の第1組、第2組、および第3組の各々において隣接する複数の固体発光器の重なった点像強度分布関数を示す記憶された複数の点像強度分布関数と、を備え
前記コントローラは、
前記プログラムストアの複数のソフトウェア命令によって、前記記憶された複数の点像強度分布関数を用いて前記複数の駆動信号に従って前記複数の固体発光器が駆動されるときに前記第1の色、第2の色、および第3の色の各々の照射される有効輝度パターンを計算するように構成され、
前記第1の色、第2の色、および第3の色の各々の有効輝度パターンは、前記ディスプレイの各画素に対する前記第1の色、第2の色、および第3の色の各々の計算された対応する輝度レベルを備え、
