It has been well known that it is effective to heat intake air with an intake air heating device, generally called an intake heater, provided in the middle of an intake passage. Intake air heating devices used for this intake air heating have been proposed in various forms in the past, one of which uses a ceramic plate heater such as a PTC heater made of a positive temperature coefficient thermistor with a lattice structure. are disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-open No. 148658-1982, No. 182253-1983, and No. 25652-1988.

In order to obtain this, the plate heater is formed in a lattice shape such as a square lattice or a honeycomb element, that is, a ventilation structure, and the smaller the lattice size, the larger the heat generating surface area of the plate heater.

Although this is preferable for reducing white smoke emissions, the smaller the grid size of the plate heater due to its increased heat generating surface area, the greater the intake resistance during engine operation. During high-speed operation, the pressure drop in the engine intake system increases, causing a decrease in engine output.

As a result, power is wasted, and at this time, the filling efficiency is significantly reduced due to the intake resistance caused by the plate heater.

The heating heater is configured to be located at the retracted position, or a bypass intake passage is provided that bypasses the intake air heating heater disposed across the intake passage, and when the intake air is heated, the bypass intake passage is closed by a shutoff valve. Utility Model Application No. 55-110764 and Utility Model Application Publication No. 110764/1982 are configured to close the shutoff valve and open the shutoff valve when intake air heating is not required, such as during high-speed operation, so that the intake air flows through the bypass intake passage.

Furthermore, especially in the case of a fragile heater such as a heater made of ceramics, the risk of damage to the heater increases as the heater moves. The bypass intake passage system does not have the same problems as the movable heater type, but it does have the disadvantage of increasing the size of the internal combustion engine's intake system.

The present invention is characterized in that a plate-shaped heater such as a heater is provided, the part of the surface portion is a large opening, and the opening is configured to be selectively closed by a valve element.

When heating the intake air is not necessary and pressure loss in the engine intake system becomes a problem, such as during high-speed operation, the valve element may be located in the open position and the opening portion may be opened, so that most of the intake air is heated when the intake air is heated. All of the air flows through the plate heater, which effectively heats the intake air. On the other hand, during high-speed operation, the intake air flows through the plate heater as well as through the opening, which heats the engine. Increased pressure loss in the intake system is avoided.

Since the plate-shaped heaters are each fixedly arranged, there is no need to troubleshoot the process of energizing them, and there is little risk of damage to the plate-shaped heaters.

The intake air heating device 1 according to the present invention is connected in communication between the intake inlet end 52 of the intake manifold 51 and the connecting end 54 of the intake pipe 53 to the intake manifold 51. Therefore, intake air flows from the intake pipe 53 through the intake air heating device 1 into the intake manifold 51, and is thereby drawn into a combustion chamber (not shown) of the diesel engine 50.

As a result, even when the intake air is being heated after the engine is started, the valve element 11 is opened during high-speed operation, and most of the intake air flows through the intake passage opening 7. This prevents pressure loss in the engine intake system from increasing, and also prevents a large amount of intake air from flowing through the PTC heater 9, thereby avoiding wasteful power consumption in the PTC heater 9.
