In this method, as shown in FIG. 1, a large number of superconducting wires 2 are housed in a metal tube 1, and a lid is closed with a tip member 3 and a rear end member 4, which form noses at the tip and rear ends, respectively. Thereafter, a composite billet 5 for extrusion is used in which the metal tube 1 and the leading and trailing end members 3 and 4 are electron beam welded while the inside thereof is vacuum degassed.

However, when performing hydrostatic extrusion using a composite billet with the structure described above, the average hardness of the composite billet, that is, the composite billet 5
The average value of the hardness of each material distributed in terms of area ratio in a cross section perpendicular to the axial direction varies greatly between the tip member 3 and the composite billet main body, When the superconducting wire 2 reached the vicinity of the extrusion die, the extrusion pressure fluctuated rapidly, and the superconducting wire 2 broke through the metal tube 1, causing the tip member to separate.

For example, such a phenomenon is more likely to occur as the Cu ratio (ratio of Cu stabilizing material to superconducting material) of the superconducting wire becomes smaller, and therefore it has been difficult to hydrostatically extrude multi-core superconducting wires with a small Cu ratio. .

FIG. 2 shows a longitudinal cross-sectional view of a composite billet 5', in which a tube 1' made of a Cu stabilizing material is filled with a large number of superconducting wires 2' each having a regular hexagonal cross section. Both ends thereof are covered with a front end member 3' and a rear end member 4'. A reinforcing pipe 6' is fitted around the outer periphery of the contact area between the tip member 3' and the superconducting wire 2', and the Cu tube 1' and the front and rear end members are welded using an electron beam. Since the entire composite billet 5' is placed in a vacuum system during this welding, the inside of the billet is also evacuated at the same time, making it easier to join the superconducting wires during extrusion.

A Nb tube with an inner diameter of 41 mmφ is housed, and 301 pieces of Cu-13wt%Sn alloy coated Nb wire (Cu-Sn alloy/Nb=2.0) with a regular hexagonal cross section are filled in this Nb tube, and the tip member is hardened. It was made of a Cu-Cr alloy with Hv=110.

On the other hand, a reinforcing Cu pipe with an outer diameter of 43 mmφ and an inner diameter of 33 mmφ was fitted to the outer periphery of the rear end of the tip member of this composite billet to create a composite billet, and these composite billets were hydrostatically extruded using a 33 mmφ die. As a result, in the former composite billet, the maximum extrusion pressure of the tip member increased from 5800 Kg/cm 2 to 6200 Kg/cm 2 when it reached the part where the composite wire was filled, and at the same time the composite wire broke through the Cu pipe. It became impossible to extrude.

On the other hand, in the case of the latter composite billet, stable extrusion was possible over the entire length of the composite billet at an extrusion pressure of 6200 kg/cm 2 .

As explained above, according to the present invention, during hydrostatic extrusion processing of a multicore superconducting wire, it is possible to prevent the composite billet from breaking due to fluctuations in extrusion pressure, and to perform stable extrusion pressure.
