Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 本発明は電気光学的表示材料として有用なトラ
ン誘導体の新規ネマチツク液晶化合物に関する。
本発明によつて提供される新規ネマチツク液晶化
合物は 一般式 〔式中、Ｒは炭素原子数１〜９の直鎖状アルキル
基を表わし、ＸはＦ、Cl、Br又はCNを表わし、
シクロヘキサン環はトランス（エカトリアル−エ
カトリアル）配置である。〕 で表わされる化合物である。
液晶表示セルの代表的なものにエム・シヤツト
M.Schadt等〔APPLIED PHYSICS LETTERS
18、127〜128（1971）〕によつて提案された電界
効果型セル（フイールド・エフエクト・モード・
セル）又はジー・エイチ・ハイルマイヤー（G.H
Helimeier）等〔PROCEEDING OF THEI.E.
E.E.56 1162〜1171（1968）〕によつて提案された
動的光散型セル（ダイミツク・スキヤツタリン
グ・モード・セル）又はジー・エイチ・ハイルマ
イヤー（（Ｇ・Ｈ Heilmeier）等〔APPLIED
PHYSICS LETTERS 13、91（1968）〕あるい
はデイー・エル・ホワイト（Ｄ Ｌ White）等
〔JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS45、
4718（1974）〕によつて提案されたゲスト・ホスト
型セルなどがある。
これらの液晶表示セルの中で現在主流をなすも
のは、電界効果型セルの一種のTN型セルであ
る。このTN型セルにおいては、G.Bauerによつ
てMol.Cryst.Liq.Cryst.63 45（1981）に報告され
ているように、セル外観を損う原因となるセル表
面での干渉縞の発生を防止するために、セルに充
填される液晶材料の屈折率の異方性Δoとセルの
厚さdμｍの積を或る特定の価に設定する必要性
がある。実用的に使用される液晶表示セルでは、

    基を表わし、ＸはＦ、Cl、Br又はCNを表わし、

    カトリアル）配置である。〕 で表わされる化合物。
