(a) Field of Industrial Application The present invention relates to an anode for an alkaline storage battery that uses nickel hydroxide as an active material and binds and holds the nickel hydroxide active material in a powder state using a binder or the like. (b) Conventional technology A sintered anode is conventionally used as an anode for an alkaline storage battery, and this sintered anode is made by impregnating a porous metal body obtained by sintering nickel powder with a nickel salt solution. The nickel salt was then converted into nickel hydroxide through alkali treatment. However, this sintered anode requires complicated active material impregnation operations such as impregnation of nickel salt into a porous metal body and alkali treatment, and the above steps are required to impregnate a predetermined amount of active material. Therefore, as an anode that is easy to manufacture and easy to increase energy density, for example, a metal plate with punched holes is used as an active material carrier, and a powdered active material is added to this active material carrier. , an anode manufactured by applying and drying a paste made by mixing a conductive powder, a binder, and water, and a three-dimensional network structure metal such as a sponge-like metal or metal fiber mat as an active material carrier, and this active material carrier. Non-sintered anodes made by holding a nickel hydroxide active material in powder form, such as an anode manufactured by directly filling a powdered active material into a nickel hydroxide active material, are being considered. By the way, in a sintered anode that uses nickel hydroxide as an active material, by adding cobalt salt to the impregnating liquid, cobalt is added in the form of cobalt hydroxide into the anode, and the utilization rate of nickel hydroxide can be increased. Things are being done to increase it. Various proposals have been made to add cobalt to non-sintered anodes, including JP-A-55-14666.
Publication No. 1987-75767 and Japanese Patent Publication No. 1983-7576-
In 205157 publication, metal cobalt is added,
JP-A-56-147367 proposes the use of coprecipitated hydroxide of nickel and cobalt, but metal cobalt is expensive, and JP-A-58-147367
-75767, in which the active material paste containing metallic cobalt is left to dry in the presence of oxygen, requires a long time to manufacture and requires extra space to be left in place. 1977
Products manufactured in an inert atmosphere or a reducing atmosphere, as in Japanese Patent No. 205157, are not practical because the manufacturing process becomes complicated. Co-precipitated hydroxide of nickel and cobalt obtained in JP-A No. 56-147367 is also physically unstable, and it is difficult to control at the synthesis stage, making it bulky, resulting in poor filling properties. There is. Furthermore, JP-A-61-74261 proposes adding β-type cobalt hydroxide, but this β-type cobalt hydroxide generally has poor chemical stability and becomes inert when left in the air. Since it changes to trivalent hydroxide, it is necessary to pay close attention to its management, and the addition effect cannot be fully exerted unless it is left for a certain period of time after injecting the electrolyte until the start of the first charge. There is a problem. (c) Problems to be Solved by the Invention The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and aims to increase the utilization rate of a non-sintered anode using nickel hydroxide as an active material, and further improve productivity. The aim is to provide an excellent anode. (d) Means for solving the problem The main feature is that a powdered nickel hydroxide active material and a cobalt hydroxide powder containing both α-type and β-type crystal systems are held in an active material carrier. It is. (E) Effect The mechanism by which cobalt improves the utilization rate of nickel hydroxide in electrodes for alkaline storage batteries is explained as follows. The added cobalt or cobalt hydroxide is ionized and diffuses onto the surface of the nickel hydroxide particles, where it enters the nickel crystal lattice and becomes a solid solution. As a result, the potential of proton exchange is lowered, allowing the charging and discharging reactions to proceed smoothly, and this appears as a phenomenon of high utilization rate. Therefore, while the cobalt to be added is highly active and easily ionized, it is also required to be stable against oxidation in consideration of the manufacturing process of the electrode. As a result of various studies to satisfy this condition, it was found that a cobalt hydroxide powder containing both α-type and β-type crystal systems is suitable, and the present invention has been completed. Generally used cobalt hydroxide has a β-type crystal system, is pale pink, and has highly adhesive fine particles, whereas the cobalt hydroxide used in the present invention is blue-green, relatively coarse, and has good fluidity. This shows that. In addition, as shown in Figure 1, the analysis results by X-ray diffraction show that cobalt hydroxide a used in the present invention contains β-type cobalt hydroxide a, but the amount is small, and the new α-type A peak is observed (indicated by △ in Fig. 1). Also a
It can be seen that the overall diffraction peak is low and the crystal growth is not progressing very much. Furthermore, the analysis results by differential thermal analysis are shown in FIG. The temperature increase rate at this time was 10℃/min, and in Figure 2, the sample temperature (horizontal axis) and the sample weight at that time (initial weight 100%) are shown when using a thermobalance (TG). The relationship between the relative weight when
At the bottom of the figure, a DTA curve is shown that represents the endothermic and exothermic states as displacements on the vertical axis when the sample temperature (horizontal axis) is changed. From this result, the cobalt hydroxide a used in the present invention has a higher TG content than the conventionally used β-type cobalt hydroxide b.
Both the and DTA curves draw complicated curves,
Looking from the low temperature side, the TG curve first reaches 90℃.
On the other hand, the weight decreases due to the desorption of adsorbed water from the vicinity.
An endotherm is observed in the DAT curve, then
From around 145℃, oxidation from cobalt hydroxide [Co(OH) 2 ] to tricobalt tetroxide [Co 3 O 4 ] occurs in two stages, and a corresponding weight loss (TG curve) and heat generation (DTA curve) appear. I understand that. On the other hand, in the conventionally used β-type cobalt hydroxide b, cobalt hydroxide [Co
Only the exotherm (DTA curve) and weight loss (TG curve) corresponding to the oxidation of tricobalt tetroxide (Co 3 O 4 ) from (OH) 2 ] to tricobalt tetroxide (Co 3 O 4 ) are observed. Comparing the calorific value of both in the oxidation reaction on the DTA curve, it is found that cobalt hydroxide a used in the present invention
The calorific value of B is extremely small compared to the conventionally used β-type cobalt hydroxide b, and is too small even when the presence or absence of adsorbed water is taken into consideration. From the above facts,
The cobalt hydroxide a used in the present invention is a mixture of α-type and β-type, contains some amorphous cobalt hydroxide, and is different from the conventionally used β-type cobalt hydroxide b. Since the oxidation initiation temperature is low and the calorific value during oxidation is small, it can be seen that Co 2+ ions and OH - ions are bound together by a much weaker bonding force and are easily ionized. The fact that the cobalt hydroxide molecules do not form an orderly crystal system and the bonding strength of cobalt hydroxide molecules is small lowers the potential energy for producing cobalt ions in the system, which is necessary for solid solution formation, and promotes their production. This, in turn, achieves high utilization rates. Although it has such properties, the cobalt hydroxide used in the present invention is stable even when left in the air, and its crystallinity and other physical properties do not change even after one year or more. (F) Example [Example] To 95 parts by weight of nickel hydroxide powder, 5 parts by weight of cobalt hydroxide containing both α-type and β-type crystal systems whose oxidation initiation temperature by heating is 165°C was added and mixed. Then, add a glue liquid [hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC)] to make a paste, fill the inside of the nickel fiber sintered body with this paste, and after drying,
A completed electrode A was obtained by pressing at Kg/cm 2 . The cobalt hydroxide used here has a particle size of 6μ and a specific surface area of 28
m 2 /g, which was a blue-green powder with good fluidity. [Comparative Example] Comparative electrode B was obtained in the same manner as in Example except that 5 parts by weight of β-type cobalt hydroxide (oxidation initiation temperature upon heating was 185° C.) was added to 95 parts of nickel hydroxide. The cobalt hydroxide used here is a pale pink powder with an average particle diameter of 1.0 μm or less and a specific surface area of 18 m 2 /g, and has strong adhesive properties. These electrodes A and B were combined with a cadmium electrode plate to construct a nickel-cadmium storage battery, and the utilization rate of the electrodes was measured. The results are shown in the table.

の工業的価値はきわめて大きい。[Table] Note that the utilization rate (1) is when the first charge is started immediately after the electrolyte is poured into the battery, and the utilization rate (2) is when the first charge is started after the battery is left for 24 hours after the electrolyte is poured into the battery. This is what we started. From the results in this table, electrode A of the present invention to which cobalt hydroxide containing both α-type and β-type crystal systems is added not only has a high utilization rate regardless of the initial charge start time, but also has a high utilization rate as the number of cycles progresses. It can be seen that stable capacity can be obtained without any accompanying deterioration. This is because, as described above, the active material forms a solid solution and easily attains a highly active state, and the so-called "aging" process after pouring the electrolyte as in comparative electrode B is not required. Furthermore, the conventionally used β-type cobalt hydroxide is unstable when placed in the air, which causes the problem of fluctuations in the utilization rate of the active material, but the one used in the present invention is left unused for a long period of time. However, there is no change and no effect appears. Furthermore, the cobalt hydroxide powder used in the present invention has good fluidity and does not cause problems peculiar to powders such as adhesion and bridge formation, so it has advantages in the process such as easy maintenance of manufacturing equipment. It's also big. According to differential thermal analysis, cobalt hydroxide commonly used in the β type starts to oxidize at 180° C. or higher, although there are some variations. The oxidation initiation temperature of the cobalt hydroxide used in the present invention varied somewhat depending on the lot, but was usually between 160 and 170°C and below 170°C. This variation is probably due to α in the crystal system.
It is thought that this depends on changes in the ratio of type and β type. (G) Effects of the Invention The anode for alkaline storage batteries according to the present invention can obtain a high utilization rate immediately after injecting the electrolyte, can maintain a high utilization rate for a long period of time, and is not subject to any restrictions in the process. Since it can be manufactured, its industrial value is extremely large.
