In magnetic recording technology, high coercivity recording media have recently come into use due to the demand for high-density recording. To record signals on a high coercive force medium, the ferrite used in conventional magnetic heads is insufficient, so metallic magnetic materials with higher Bs are used.
For example, sendust, Co-based amorphous alloys, etc. have come to be used.

From the viewpoint of mass production of the head, a magnetic head has been devised in which the main magnetic circuit is formed by depositing such a metallic magnetic material on a block material by a method such as sputtering. As an example, FIG. 6 shows a perspective view of a conventional magnetic head disclosed in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 142716/1982. In the figure, 1a and 1b are non-magnetic ceramic blocks, and 2a and 2b are metal magnetic thin films such as sendust and Co-based amorphous alloy deposited on 1a and 1b by a method such as sputtering. 2 magnetic material is formed. Reference numerals 3a and 3b indicate groove filling members, which are filled by a method such as filling with a melting material or adhering by a sputtering method, and are generally made of melt-filled glass. 4 is a non-magnetic gap material such as SiO 2 , and 5 is a coil groove. The depth D of the coil groove 5 is such that the metal magnetic thin films 2a and 2b are not completely separated. Note that the coil is omitted. FIG. 7 shows the above-mentioned magnetic head viewed from the recording medium sliding surface. The metal magnetic thin films 2a and 2b, which are the first and second magnetic materials, each have a substantially V-shaped cross section, and the width of the bottom of the V shape regulates the track width Tw of the recording medium. The bottom portions of the letter-shaped metal magnetic thin films 2a and 2b are butted against each other with a gap material 4 interposed therebetween to form a magnetic circuit. Note that A in the figure is the gap forming surface. Here, all or part of the non-magnetic ceramic blocks 1a, 1b may be made of a magnetic material such as ferrite to reduce magnetic resistance. However, in the case of a structure in which ferrite is exposed on the sliding surface of the recording medium, there is a possibility that sliding noise peculiar to ferrite may increase.

A general method for manufacturing the conventional magnetic head shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 is shown in FIGS. 8A to 8F in order of steps.
First, as shown in FIG.
This is the step of digging a coil groove 5 that is substantially perpendicular to this. Note that the V-shaped groove 9 must be deeper than the coil groove 5. Next, as shown in FIG. 8B, a metal magnetic material is deposited on the grooved surface of the ceramic block 1 by a method such as sputtering to form a metal magnetic thin film 2 which becomes the first and second magnetic materials. Next, as shown in FIG. 8C, the metal magnetic thin film 2 is filled with a non-magnetic groove filling member 3, and the metal magnetic thin film 2 is ground to a desired track width Tw to the gap forming surface A.
A process of polishing and exposing is performed. Next, as shown in FIG. 8D, a non-magnetic gap material 4 such as SiO 2 is applied to the gap forming surface A where the desired track width Tw is exposed.
After applying it by sputtering, vapor deposition, etc.,
As shown in FIG. 8E, unnecessary members of the coil groove 5 are removed and cut along the dashed line B to obtain a pair of core block halves. Subsequently, as shown in FIG. 8, the obtained core block halves are butt-joined at the gap forming surface A, and cut along the dashed lines C and C' to obtain one magnetic head. Note that the dashed-dotted lines C and C' may be cut at a desired azimuth angle with respect to the gap forming surface A.

Conventional magnetic heads were constructed and manufactured as described above, but when such magnetic heads are used for long periods of time, wear, particularly uneven wear, occurs on the magnetic heads, which seriously affects the recording and reproducing characteristics. It turns out that there is a problem with giving. This is because the non-magnetic materials 3a, 3b are generally metal magnetic thin films 2a, 2.
It wears out more easily than b. This is a problem, especially considering that the contact (spacing) between the magnetic head and the medium on the gap forming surface A is closely related to the recording and reproducing characteristics. Such non-magnetic material 3
As a method of preventing uneven wear of the non-magnetic materials 3a and 3b, it is sufficient to select a material having almost the same hardness (wear performance) as the metal magnetic thin films 2a and 2b. The materials 3a and 3b must be filled with a material that can be filled. Generally, glass is used for the non-magnetic materials 3a and 3b, but
Glasses with higher hardness tend to have higher melting temperatures. Therefore, there has been a problem in that it has become difficult to select a glass having appropriate hardness within an allowable temperature range that does not deteriorate the characteristics of the metal magnetic thin films 2a, 2b. In particular, metal magnetic thin films 2a, 2
This is serious if b is an amorphous alloy.

In this invention, the conventional magnetic head has V
The inside of the V-shaped metal magnetic thin film was the block material to which the metal magnetic thin film was applied, and the outside was the groove-filling member to be filled. Conversely, the outside of the V-shaped metal magnetic thin film was the metal magnetic thin film. This is the block material to which the thin film is applied, and the inner side is the groove-filling member, so the non-magnetic material near the gap forming surface, which is the most important, becomes the block material to which the metal magnetic thin film is applied, which limits the range of material selection. It is possible to select a material that can be widely spread and has less uneven wear.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a magnetic head obtained by a method of manufacturing a magnetic head according to an embodiment of the present invention, and FIG. 2 is a plan view of the magnetic head as seen from the sliding surface of the recording medium. In the figure, the positions of the block members 1a, 1b and the groove filling members 3a, 3b are interchanged with those of the conventional magnetic head. Reference numeral 67 denotes an adhesive groove for joining two core block halves, which can generally be filled with melted glass. For conventional magnetic heads,
The groove filling members 3a, 3b have also played the role of adhesive for joining two core block halves, but in one embodiment of the present invention, the joint portion is mostly butted with non-magnetic ceramic blocks 1a, 1b. Therefore, such adhesive grooves 6 and 7 are provided.
In this case, a part of the coil groove 5 is used as the adhesive groove 6, but a dedicated groove may be provided. Further, the grooves do not have to be along the track width direction, but may be grooves along the medium running direction.

Next, as shown in FIG. 3B, a metal magnetic material is deposited on the processed surface of the groove 9 on the ceramic block 1 by a method such as sputtering to form a V-shaped metal magnetic material that will become the first and second magnetic films. A film 2 is formed. Next, as shown in FIG. 3C, a groove filling member 3 is filled inside the V-shaped metal magnetic film 2, and a part of the block material 1 and the metal magnetic film 2 are ground and polished from the block material 1 side. Then, the metal magnetic film 2 of Tw with a predetermined track width is exposed to form a gap forming surface A, and the unnecessary groove filling member 3 is ground to, for example, a dashed line A' to obtain a desired thickness A-A'. Note that the groove filling member 3 may be made of magnetic material or non-magnetic material. Possible filling methods include melting and filling with a welding material, sputtering, and other methods.

Figures 4A and 5B show magnetic heads according to other embodiments, respectively, and are perspective views of magnetic heads obtained using composite blocks of magnetic and non-magnetic materials in consideration of the above points. In Fig. 4A, the non-magnetic materials 1a and 1b extend up to about the gap depth, and the deeper part is comprised of magnetic materials 8a and 8b such as ferrite. 5A is characterized in that the non-magnetic materials 1a and 1b are made of a magnetic material such as ferrite only in the vicinity of the gap forming surface A. Figures 4(b) and 5(b) show the magnetic material 8 used to obtain the magnetic heads shown in FIGS. 4(a) and 5(a), respectively.
This figure shows a composite block of a non-magnetic material 1 and a non-magnetic material 1. This composite block may be processed through the steps shown in Fig. 3A to Fig. 3. In this case, the magnetic resistance is reduced, and the recording and reproducing efficiency of the magnetic head can be improved. In this way, the coil groove 5 does not necessarily have to form a closed loop with the metal magnetic thin films 2a and 2b.

In addition, in the above embodiment, the coil groove 5 penetrates through the center of the magnetic head, but it also penetrates to the bottom of the magnetic head, and after inserting the coil, the magnetic pieces are joined to form the metal magnetic thin films 2a and 2b. A closed loop may be formed using a magnetic piece, in which case the coil can be easily attached.

The wear of the groove-filling member inside the V-shaped metal magnetic thin film 2 of the magnetic head obtained by the manufacturing method of the above example shows that both side parts of the magnetic head in the track width direction are made of metal having approximately appropriate hardness. Since the structure is protected by the magnetic thin film 2 and the ceramic block, uneven wear is less likely to occur.

In the above embodiment, the first and second magnetic bodies of the two core block halves were both metal magnetic films having substantially the same V-shape when viewed from the recording medium sliding surface, but they do not necessarily have to have the same shape. Alternatively, a structure may be adopted in which a coil, a second metal magnetic thin film, etc. are formed on the core block half through a gap material by thin film technology.

As explained above, this invention forms a block material having a V-shaped groove, and forms a V-shaped groove in the block material.
Since a metal magnetic film is deposited on the upper surface of the groove, the range of selection of materials with appropriate hardness is expanded, uneven wear is reduced, and the recording medium hits the magnetic head better. This has the effect of providing a method of manufacturing a magnetic head that provides stable recording and reproducing characteristics.
