Abstract

PURPOSE:To allow the treatment of the front end face of a connector connected to a fiber made of a crosslinked elastomer and to improve an optical conductivity by forming the end face of the fiber of a transparent thermoplastic resin or glass. CONSTITUTION:A columnar body to be inserted into the front end of the connector is a circular cylindrical body of about 1.5 to 5mm which is formed of the transparent thermoplastic resin, such as polymethyl methacrylate, or quartz. This columnar body is fixed to the front end of the connector and this front end is finished to a specular surface by a melting method, etc. The optical fiber made of the crosslinked elastomer of an acrylic system, etc., is inserted to the other end side of the connector fixed with this columnar body and is adhered to the other end side of the columnar body by the connector. The treatment of the front end face of the connector is executed in such a manner, by which the degree of the loss of the optical conductivity is fairly improved.

An optical fiber made of a crosslinked elastomer such as acrylic or silicone is inserted from the other end of the connector to which such a columnar body is fixed, and is bonded to the other end of the columnar body within the connector. A crosslinked elastomer optical fiber is made of a copolymer that has a crosslinkable group in both the core material and the cladding material.
It has a crosslinked structure by using a crosslinking agent, heating, light irradiation, or a combination of these. Further, it is preferable that the core material and the columnar body have the same refractive index. Adhesion is performed by interposing an adhesive having the same or similar refractive index as these, preferably an uncrosslinked core material, and crosslinking it by heating.
