Abstract
PURPOSE: In the gas phase reaction of butadienes and sulfur, the addition of steam to the reaction system reduces tar by-products and permit continuous production of title compound used as intermediates for medicines and agricultural chemicals in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: In the gas phase reaction between a butadiene of the formula (X1, X2, X3, X4 are H, methyl, ethyl, halogen) such as butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, and sulfur, at least 0.1 mole, preferably 0.5W10 moles, per mole of the butadiene, of steam is added to the reaction system and the reaction is effected at 380W550, preferably 420W470°C to produce the objective thiophene or its derivative. Sulfur is employed in an amount of 1.0W3.0 gram atom per mole of the butadiene and preferably the steam is introduced together with the butadiene and sulfur into a gasifier to form a gas mixture, which is subjected to the reaction.
