NEW MATERIAL:Antibiotic cytophagin having the following physico-chemical properties: C, 47.22%; H, 6.94%, N, 13.21%. Molecular weight 1,000W1,500 (gel filtration). Turns brown at about 210°C, and foams at about 220°C. [α]D25=+ 5° (C=1, DMSO). Readily soluble in acetic and and dimethyl sulfoxide; fairly soluble in methanol, etc.; sparingly soluble in water, chloroform, acetone, etc. Positive to the ninhydrin, Ehrlich reactions, etc.; negative to the Sakaguchi and Pauly reactions. Neutral. White powder. Capable of detecting amino acids, e.g. lysine, aspartic acid, and threonine.
USE: Antibacterials and drugs having growth inhibitory actions, particluarly on Gram- positive bacteria.
PROCESS: Cytophagin-producing bacteria, e.g. Cytophaga BMF964-N3 (FERM-P NO. 4846), are incubated in a medium at 10W35°C for 2W5 days by the shaking culture method, and the objective antibiotic is extracted from the culture and purified.
