Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the estimation of oxygen in a sample steel material by heating the steel material in a current of hydrogen gas of a specific temperature, extracting oxygen in the form of water from iron oxide on the surface of the steel material, and measuring the estimation of oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: A sample steel material to be inspected is placed in a crucible 4 in a furnace tube 1 consisting of a refractory material. Hydrogen gas, from which impurities (especially, water) have been sufficiently removed in a refining section, is then introduced from a hydrogen gas source 5 into the furnace tube 1 which is heated to 170W550°C in a heating furnace 3. Water produced on the basis of oxygen contained in the sample is introduced with the hydrogen gas into an analyzer (a moisture meter or a mass spectrometer) 8 to subject the same to measurement. The measurement is carried out at a temperature in the above-mentioned range. As a result, the amoutn of oxygen alone in iron oxide on the surface of the sample is determined. After the oxygen has been completely extracted in the form of water, the sample is further heated at an increased temperature, and measurement is conducted as the temperature is maintained at a decomposition temperature of each oxide contained in the sample. Thus, the estimation of oxygen contained in each oxide can be determined separately.
