Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I: (R and R1 are organic residues forming esters; e.g. 1W5C alkyl groups).
USE: Agricultural and horticultural fungicides effective against blights, e.g. blast, anthracnose, and alternraia blotch.
PROCESS: A 4-hydroxy-1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidenemalonic ester of formula II is dehydrated in the presence of a dehydrating agent, e.g. conc. sulfuric acid or a sulfonyl chloride, or a substance capable of forming double bonds by halogenation of the OH group, followed by dehydrohalogention, e.g. a chlorinating agent such as thionyl chloride, below room temperature to give the objective compound of formula I. Some of the compounds of formula II are novel.
