Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain titania hydrate fiber by extraction-removing the alkali metal component in single crystalline alkali metal titanate fiber with water or acid; to convert the titania hydrate fiber into titania glass fiber by heating at below 500°C; and to obtain titania fiber by heating the titania glass fiber at a high temp.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material mixt. for M2O.nTiO2 (M; an alkali metal and n; 1W6) is optionally mixed with M2MoO4 or M2WO4 as a flux in a molar ratio of 5:95W50:50 and heated to 800W1300°C to form a melt. Using this melt single crystalline fibrous alkali metal titanate is obtd., and the M2O component in the fibrous product is extracted to convert at least the surface compsn. into TiO2. nH2O, giving titania hydrate fiber. This fiber is heat dehydrated at below 500°C to produce titania glass fiber, which is then heated to 500W1200°C to be converted into anatase-type crystalline titania fiber.
