Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain ubiquinone O10 (U) useful as medicines industrially advantageously, by culturing ubiquinone-proclucing bacteria which belong to the genus Rhodopseudomonas in a nutrient medium containing given amounts or more of biotin and thiamine, and by collecting U from the cultured bacterium bodies.
CONSTITUTION: Microorganisms, e.g. Rhodopseudomonas ( FERM-P No.879 ), which belong to the genus Rhodopseudomonas, and have the ability to produce ubiquinone Q10(U), are cultured in a nutrient medium containing more than 5mμ moles of biotin and more than 0.2μ mole of thiamine at 20W40°C and a pH of 5W 9, preferably ≤7. After the culturing, bacterium bodies are collected, and extracted with an organic solvent or by saponification to give an extract containing U. The extract is then fractionated by column chromatography or partitioned and extracted with an organic solvent to concetrate the U fraction, which is crystallized from ethanol.
