Abstract

PURPOSE: An esterase produced by a microorganism belonging to Corynebacterium or the cultured cells are made to act on an organic carboxylic acid ester, thus obtaining in high yield an optically active secondary alcohol and an optically active organic carboxylic ester which are useful as starting materials for drugs and agricultural chemicals.
CONSTITUTION: A bacterium capable of hydrolyzing an organic carboxylic ester of formula, which belongs to Corynebacterium, such as Corynebacterium equi (IFO3730), is cultured in an enriched medium and the resulting culture, or bacterium cells, or the esterase separated from the medium is made to act on the above organic carboxylic ester, thus giving an optically active secondary alcohol of formula (II) and an optically active organic carboxylic ester of formula III (R1, R2 are different alkyl or alkenyl groups from each other, R3 is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or alkenyl group).
