Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a phthalic ester usable as plasticizers for non-rigid vinyl chloride resins in high yield, by reacting an inexpensive saturated aliphatic ether with a phthalic anhydride in the presence of a Lewis acid or solfuric acid.
CONSTITUTION: An ether of the formula R1-O-R2 (R1 and R2 are 2W13C alkyl groups) is reacted with phthalic anhydride in the presence of a Lewis acid of the formula MXn (M is antimony, tin, zinc, iron, bismuth, etc.; X is Cl or Br; n is 2W 5) or sulfuric acid at 130W250°C, preferably 170W200°C, to give a phthalic ester. SnCl4, ZnCl2, FeCl3, etc. may be cited as the Lewis acid. The saturated ether, formed as a by-product in the preparation of an alcohol for plasticizers by the Oxo method, is effectively utilized.
