Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the above mentioned powder high speed steel which has an excellent heat resisting property and is most suitably used to make cutting tools for high speed cutting and cutting of low machinability materials, by adding both Co and V elements in specified amounts to a steel composition under a condition in which constant amounts of W and Mo exist.
CONSTITUTION: This highly heat resisting powder steel contains 10W15%, especially 11W13.5% of (W+2Mo), 4W10% of V and 8W20% of Co. In addition to its heat resisting property which has been considerably improved by the addition of Co, its wear resistance property has also been improved by the addition of V together with the Co, and the steel can obtain cutting tool characteristics which are suitable even for severe cutting conditions, such as high speed cutting, etc. When 3.8W4.5% of Cr and 1.4W1.6% of C are added to the steel in addition to the above mentioned elements, a hardenability can be given to the steel, because the Cr and C will be contained in the matrix and carbon-nitrogen compounds, and at the same time, temper hardening, hot hardness and antioxidation property at the time of heat treatment of the steel can also be improved.
