Abstract
PURPOSE: To measure the length of crack and the propagation speed of the crack, by detecting a sound wave (AC (AE wave ) generated at the time of cracking of a structure or the like to determine the position of a sound source and the energy of the cracking and calculating the length of the cracking from the stress and the cracking energy.
CONSTITUTION: AE waves resulting from the release of elastic energy due to cracks caused at points X1, X2 of a structure such as a pressure container are detected by sensors S1, S2 to determine the position of the sound sources by an arrival time difference measuring circuit 18 and a sound source position calculating circuit 20. The integrated values of the detected AE waves corresponding to the numerous points X1, X2... are summed up by an energy summing-up circuit 28 depending on signals of the positions of the sound sources to indicate the energy of cracks on a monitor 30. The length of the cracks and the time-dependent change in the length are calculated by a crack length propagation speed calculating circuit 34 from the cracking energy and the average value of stress measured by a stress measuring circuit 32 and a sensor S3 such as a strain gauge. The crack length and the crack propagation speed are thus determined to raise an alarm if necessary.
