Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a diphenylamine.acetone condensate under atmospheric pressure, having comparable anti-oxidant activity to the condensate prepared under high pressure, by condensing diphenylamine with acetone in the presence of a solvent which is slightly soluble to water and forms an azeotripic mixture with water, while removing the produced water from the system.
CONSTITUTION: Diphenylamine is condensed with acetone in the presence of a solvent which is slightly soluble to water and forms an azeotropic mixture with water, pref. an aromatic hydrocarbon having a boiling point of 50W200°C , esp. 100W170°C, pref. at a reaction temperature of 100W300°C, esp, 150W280°C, under atmospheric pressure, while distilling off the produced water as an azeotropic mixture with the solvent, to afford a condensate having a viscosity of 100W20,000 cps at 25°C. The high reaction temperature results in the formation of resinous materials.
