Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate a mixture containing isomers of hydrocarbon group-substituted phenols into its components, in high efficiency, by using an adsorbent comprising magnesium oxide having different adsorption selectivity to each isomer component.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture containing isomers of hydrocarbon-substituted phenols such as cresol isomers, xylenol isomers, etc., is treated with an adsorbent containing magnesium oxide, at 0W300°C, pref. 10W200°C. The adsorbed amount of each isomer depends upon its adsorption selectivity. The isomers adsorbed to the adsorbent are desorbed by conventional means, and again adsorbed to the MgO-containing adsorbent. By repeating the procedure, the mixture can be separated into its components according to the ratios of their adsorption selectivities. The magnesium oxide is supported by or attached to a carrier such as silica or alumina.
