Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover chromic acid contained in an aged chromium-plating soln. as Cr2O3, by neutralizing the aged chromium-plating soln. or a chromate-treatment soln. with ammonia to precipitate and separate the heavy metals contained in the soln., then by evaporating the residual soln. to dryness.
CONSTITUTION: To an aged chromium-plating soln. or a chromate-treatment soln. for Zn-plated articles, the soln. which contains CrO3 as a principal component, is added amonia to neutralize the soln. to a pH about 6W7, hereby, heavy metals, e.g., Fe Zn, Cu, Ni contained in high concn. in the aged soln. are precipitated as hydroxides. CrO3 and S remain dissolved respectively as (NH4)2Cr2O7 are (NH4)2 SO4 in the soln. These heavy metal hydroxides are removed from the soln. by filtration. The residual soln. is heated to be evaporated to dryness, and thermally decomposed to recover (NH4)2Cr2O7 as harmless trivalent Cr2O3. S content is decreased during evaporation to dryness, and removed by washing with water or acid.
