Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a pattern expressing a three-dimensional ruggedness such as the grain of stone by a method wherein a light-transmitting paint is applied to the surface of an FRP article which is formed thereon with a ruggedness by SMC molding.
CONSTITUTION: In one embodiment, for example, an SMC is molded by means of a mold A in which a pattern such as spar pattern is formed of projections 1 and recesses 2, to obtain a molded FRP article B having recesses 1' and projections 2' corresponding respectively to the projections 1 and recesses 2. A light-transmitting paint different in color from the article B is applied to the rugged surface of the article B. The tone density of the paint is expressed according to the rugged shape, so that a three-dimensional pattern is obtained. The coating condition of the paint is improved by subjecting the rugged surface of the article B to uniform roughening by sandlast or the like, to dust removal, and to degreasing by acetone or the like, before application of the paint.
