Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a modifier for antibiotics or its intermediate, in one step, by using an easily avilable aromatic aldehyde, azid, etc. as a starting meterial.
CONSTITUTION: A 2,2,2-trihalo-1-aryl-ethanol of formula I [Ar is (un)substituted aromatic group; X is halogen] is reacted with an azide of formula V (M is alkali metal) in the presence of a base in an aqueous medium to give an α-azido aromatic acetic acid of formula I. Alternatively, an aromatic aldehyde of formula III is reacted with a trihalomethane of formula IV and an azide of formula V in an aqueous medium to form the compound of formula I. Both of the reactions are in one step, respectively. An α-amino aromatic acetic acid, obtained by reducing the compound of formula I, is a modifier for synthetic penicillin and cephalosporin antibiotics.
