Abstract

PURPOSE: To suppress the hydrogenation loss of the aromatic nucleus in the purification or terephthalic acid by the hydrogenation of crude terephthalic acid containing colored impurities in an alkaline aqueous solution in the presence of a Ru catalyst, by carrying out the purification in the copresence of free activated charcoal.
CONSTITUTION: Crude terephthalic acid containing impurities which lower the light transmittance at 340nm when dissolved in an alkaline aqueous solution, is dissolved in an alkaline aqueous solution containing ≥0.3 equivalent, pref. 0.8W2 equivalent, based on 1 equivalent of terephthalic acid, of an alkali, and hydrogenated under a hydrogen partial pressure of 2W60atm, at 130W300°C, in the presence of 0.001W 10wt% (as metal), based on the terephthalic acid to be treated, of a Ru catalyst and 0.5W50wt% of free activated charcoal (pref. activated charcoal of food refining grade). The colored impurities are converted to colorless impurities, and the impurities resistant to hydrogenation are adsorbed to the activated charcoal. The colorless impurities can be separated easily from the fine particles of terephthalic acid by the following treatment.
