Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain high quality terephthalic acid, with small loss, from an alkaline aqueous solution of terephthalic acid, containing impurities which decrease the transmission rate of light at a specific wave length when dissolved in an alkaline aqueous solution, by hydrogenating the solution in the presence of an Ru catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid containing impurities which decrease the transmission rate of light at 340nm in an alkaline aqueous solution, is dissolved in an alkaline aqueous solution containing ≥0.3 equivalent, preferably 0.8W2 equivalent of alkali based on that of terephthalic acid, and then hydrogenated with a catalyst comprising Ru supported on active carbons etc., to hydrogenate the above impurities selectively, inhibiting the formation of nuclear hydrogenated products and to afford high purity terephthalic acid.
EFFECT: Economical purification of crude terephthalic acid recovered in the processes of e.g. purification of terephthalic acid, recovery of solvents and catalysts, etc. in a terephthalic acid plant.
