Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A sulfonyl nitrite of formula I (R is organic residue).
EXAMPLE: p-Toluenesulfonyl nitrite.
USE: A diazotizing agent as effective as a thionitrite.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I is prepared by reacting a sulfinic acid of formula RSO2H with N2O4 in an ordinary solvent at -20W0°C. The reaction also gives the corresponding sulfonic acid of formula RSO3H at nearly the same yield. The organic residue R is e.g. alkylaryl group, halogenated aryl group, etc.
