Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a high-quality polymer with a greatly reduced amount of scale deposit, by polymerizing the titled monomer in an aqueous medium containing a dispersion assistant, a polymerization initiator and a small amount of a thiocyanate in a polymerizer coated with a scale deposition inhibitor.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene monomer or its mixture with a monomer copolymerizable therewith, e.g. acrylonitrile, is polymerized in an aqueous medium containing a dispersion assistant, e.g. partly saponified polyvinyl alcohol, and a polymerization initiator, e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile, in a polymerizer in which the inner wall and a part in contact with the monomer are previously coated with a scale deposition inhibitor, e.g. consisting of a dye and/or pigment, in the presence of a thiocyanate in an amount of 1ppm or more based on the charged monomer in the polymerization system to give the aimed polymer. Preferably, a monomer having a solubility in water of 0.5wt% or less at 20°C is used as a comonomer.
