Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent the deposition of polymer scale to the inner walls of a polymerizer, completely, by coating the inner walls of the polymerizer with a specific compound, using an oil-soluble peroxide as a polymerization catalyst, and adding a water-soluble sulfur compound to the polymerization system.
CONSTITUTION: In the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride or a monomer mixture composed mainly of vinyl chloride in an aqueous medium, the deposition of polymer scale to the polymerizer is prevented by (A) coating the surface to which the monomer is to be contacted, e.g. the inner walls of the polymerizer, etc. with an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal salt, ammonium salt, etc. of a sulfonic acid-type or carboxylic acid-type dye, (B) using an oil-soluble peroxide catalyst having a solubility in water of ≥0.2wt% (20°C) as a polymerization initiator, and (C) adding ≥1ppm, based on the charged monomer, of a water- soluble sulfur-containing organic compound to the polymerization system.
EFFECT: The process affords a high-quality vinyl chloride polymer having excellent heat stability exhibiting no first discoloration in molding.
