Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a uniform coating film and to increase the spinning speed of an optical fiber, by coating the optical fiber with a plastic tape made of thermoplastic resin after spinning it by heating and softening a base material for the fiber. CONSTITUTION:Optical fiber base material 1 is fitted to base material feeder 2 and inserted into heating furnace 2 gradually. Base material 1 is heated and softened in heating furnace 3 and spinned into optical fiber 4. The spinned optical fiber is immediately coated by coating roller 5 with plastic tape 6 made of thermoplastic resin, such as polyamide, poly (vinyl chloride) and polyurehtane, which is softened by being heated, and the tape is softened by heating roller 7 to adhere to the optical fiber. Thus, the uniform coating film is obtained and the fiber is spinned at a high speed.
