Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the pressure receiving surface of a seal ring from increasing and prevent the seizure due to the increased surface pressure by a method wherein stopper rings to regulate the movement of O-rings sealing between two pressure chambers are provided.
CONSTITUTION: The floating seal consists of seal rings 1 and seal covers 2 equipped as a pair respectively at each side of sealing units I and II with O-ring 3s installed respectively between the tapered surface of the seal ring and that of the seal cover. The movement of the O-ring 3 is regulated by the stopper ring 14 provided at the surface Q of the seal cover 2 to prevent the pressure receiving surface X from increasing and, as a result, the sealing surface pressure Fp is maintained at a proper value to prevent the lubricating oil from running short. Further, the size of the pressure receiving surface X can be changed freely by changing the thickness Y of the stopper ring 14 to adjust the surface pressure Fp in accordance with the capacity of the sealing surface.
