Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a thermal head wherein a heating dot part is prevented from being heated high sharply, the heat radiation is expedited and high-speed driving is enabled, by reducing the thickness of a heat-insulating layer just below the heating dot part. CONSTITUTION:An electrode layer 4 is formed in such a way that a heat-insulating layer 2 (ex: glass) is formed on a heat-resistant insulating substrate 1 (ex: alumina substrate), whereon a heating-registant element layer 3 generating Joule heat is formed, on which a heating dot part 3' is further formed, and an abrasion resisting layer 5 is also provided. In this case, the partial thickness of the heat-insulating layer 2 just below the heating dot part 3' is removed partially or completely by etching or other means. Since the thickness of the heat-insulating layer 2 is reduced or eliminated, heat radiation is promoted and the peak (T3) of surface temperature is rather lowered even when heating to high temperature is made for high-speed driving. As a result, the life of the heating-resistant element layer, etc. is prolonged and the high-speed driving (short pulse driving 2m sec or less) turns so far possible.
