Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled polymer having high heat resistance and useful as a metal-coating paint, etc., by adding a specific amount of an unsaturated carboxylic acid to a polar organic solvent solution of polyvinyl alcohol, and converting the ester thus obtained to acetal with an aldehyde.
CONSTITUTION: A solution obtained by dissolving (A) a polyvinyl alcohol in a polar organic solvent (e.g. dimethyl sulfoxide) is added with (B) an unsaturated carboxylic acid (e.g. maleic acid), and esterified by heating at ≥50°C. The amount of the (B) component is less than equivalent to the component (A). The solution is cooled at 50°C, added with an aldehyde compound (e.g. n-butyraldehyde), and acetalized at 0W50°C to obtain the objective polymer. The amount of the (B) component is pref. 5W50mol% of the component (A).
