Abstract

PURPOSE: To lower the driving voltage for a liquid crystal composition, by adding 4- cyanoterphenyl to the liquid crystal composition.
CONSTITUTION: A transparent electrode 2 of SnO2 etc. is formed on a transparent substrate 1 of glass etc. and on the transparent electrode 2 are formed an organic film of polyimide etc. which is subjected to rubbing treatment and an inorganic film as an orientation film 3 with slantingly deposited SiO2. The substrates 1 are bonded with each other with the aid of an organic adhesive material 4 in such a way as to form a parallel aperture 5. Into the aperture 5, a liquid crystal composition containing 0W5wt% 4-cyanoterphenyl is injected through an opening provided in a part of a cell, the opening is sealed up, and then light-polarizing plates 6 are arranged on both sides. A liquid crystal display element thus obtained is operated. The addition of said 4-cyanoterphenyl enables driving voltage for the liquid crystal composition to be lowered by approx. 0.1V and also its phase transition point to be raised by approx. 1W2°C.
