Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a cell gap to assure the bistable driving characteristic of a ferroelectric liquid crystal and to obtain good display characteristics by using thin film transistors as spacers between substrates.
CONSTITUTION: The side of the glass substrate 1 on which transparent electrodes 3 are formed is disposed to face the glass substrate 2 and the thin film transistors (TR) 5, 5... are used as the spacers. The glass substrate 1 is imposed on these TRs 5, 5... and further, the outside circumferential part of the substrates is sealed by a sealing material, then the two substrates are stuck to form a cell. The cell gap attains the specified value determined by the thickness of the spacers, i.e., the TRs 5, 5... in this case. The ferroelectric liquid crystal is thereafter injected into the cell to form a liquid crystal part 13 and further, polarizing plates, etc., are provided to the cell. Since the TRs 5, 5... are respectively formed to the accurate thickness, the cell gap is uniformized over the entire region of the liquid crystal element and the good display characteristic is obtd.
