Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out the polymerization in such a manner as to prevent formation of gel-like polymer as much as possible, by providing a polymerization tank with an agitator shaft having blades for mixing the vapor phase and blades for mixing the liquid phase and with baffle rods secured in positions not obstructing the rotation of the blades and feeding a material through the vapor phase.
CONSTITUTION: An agitator shaft 4 is extended through a liquid phase 2 and a vapor phase 3 in a reaction tank 1. This shaft is provided with blades 5 for mixing the liquid phase and blades 6 for mixing the vapor phase. After starting rotation of the agitator shaft 4, a material such as ethylene is fed to the reaction tank through a material feed pipe 7. While the material is passing through the vapor phase 3, it commingles uniformly and falls freely into the liquid phase 2. In the liquid phase 2, complete liquid phase mixing takes place among the material, a catalyst, a solvent, etc. On the other hand, baffle rods 8 having protrusions 9 extend through the liquid phase 2 and the vapor phase 3 and prevent the material from staying at fixed points during agitation. In this way, the conversion is further heightened and a product of uniform quality can be obtained.
