Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare carrageenan with a small amount of solvent, in high efficiency, by dissolving an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt ot the filtrate obtained by filtering the hot-water extract of red algae, and adding a water- miscible organic solvent to the solution.
CONSTITUTION: Red algae (e.g. Eucheuma spinosum) is added to a solution of 7W11pH in an amount of 1W10wt%, and dissolved by heating at 70W150°C. The solution is filtered using diatomaceous earth, active charcoal, etc. as filter aid, and the filtrate is added with a water-soluble alkali or alkaline earth metal salt (e.g. potassium chloride). The amount of the salt is 0.01W0.5wt% of the solution. Carrageenan is precipitated from the mixture by adding a water-miscible organic solvent (e.g. methanol) to the mixture.
