Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the weld workability and mechanical performance of flux for submerged arc welding by limiting the analytical values of the component amount ratios of the MnO, MgO, SiO2, TiO2 of acidic flux, as well as its basicity and bulk density. CONSTITUTION:This is the flux contg. 45-55% SiO2, wt%, 1-4% TiO2 and 1-3% F in analytical values of the flux, wherein 0.16<=MgO/SiO2<=0.30, 0.53<= MnO/SiO2<=0.80, T.CaO+TiO2<=9%, and of 0.9-1.3g/cm<3> bulk densities and the basicity B determined by the equation within a 0.53-0.85 range. The reasons for limiting the analytical values are that if the weight ratio of the SiO2 is out of the limited range no good beads are obtained. If the TiO2 is out of the limited range, slag peelability degrades. With the F below the limits, no smooth beads are obtained, and in excess of the limits, pits and blowholes produce. If the MgO/SiO exceeds the limits, pits and blowholes produce and below the same, slag peelability degrades. With the MnO/SiO2 below the limits, pot marks produce, and in excess thereof, undercuts produce.
