Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for dye in high purity in high yield, by oxidizing a nitrophenyl-β-hydroxyethyl sulfide with hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution containing tungstic acid or its salt.
CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by the formula I (one of X and Y is nitro and the other is H or Cl; n is 0 or 1) is oxidized with hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution containing tungstic acid or its salt (e.g., sodium salt, ammonium salt, etc.) as a catalyst in a pH of 3W8 at 30W100°C, preferably in a pH of 5W7 at 60W 95°C, to give the desired compound shown by the formula II. The amount of the catalyst used is preferably ≥0.005mol based on 1mol sulfide.
EFFECT: Oxidation is smoothly effected.
