Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance charge retentivitiy, photosensitivity, moisture resistance, etc., by forming a photoconductive layer made of amorphous silicon containing at least either of hydrogen or halogen atoms in a specified layer structure. CONSTITUTION:A photoconductive layer 104 is formed by providing a first semiconductor layer 102 made of alpha-Si(H,X) on a substrate 101, and on this layer 102a semiconductor layer 103 finely divided in the layer direction, and exhibiting a conduction type different from the layer 102. The depth of the semiconductor region 103 is designed so as for the imagewise exposure light to fully reach a depletion layer 105 formed in the junction face of the layers 102, 103, thus permitting the obtained electrophotograhic image forming member to be enhanced in charge retentivity and sensitivity, and to be almost freed of remaining potential by virtue of such a layer structure.
