Abstract
PURPOSE: To perform seam welding easily without using any tab plate and without trouble by pressing metallic plates of high thermal conductivity to the ends of a steel pipe and performing welding in the case of welding the seam part at the pipe ends of the steel pipe.
CONSTITUTION: A copper plate 9 is pressed by a pressing means to the position of the end 1a of a steel pipe 1 opposite to its seam part. The plate 9 has the same curvature as that of the pipe 1 so as to contact the end 1a tightly along its outside shape. A groove 11 extending in the longitudinal direction of the pipe 1 and of the transverse width and depth enough to encircle the weld beads is formed on the surface of the plate 9. While the plates 9 are pressed to both end parts of the pipe 1, welding is started from over the plate 9 toward the seam part 2 and is stopped in the suitable position on the plate 9 on the terminal side past the terminal part of welding. Since the plates 9 absorb heat near the seam parts of the pipe ends well, the accumulation of weld heat is obviated and the cracking of the pipe ends is prevented.
