Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve recording and reproducing density by using a recording medium which contains an electret material holding electric polarization, by performing signal recording by polarizing the medium according to a recorded signal, and by achieving reproduction by utilizing variation in dielectric constant by the polarization. CONSTITUTION:On a conductive substrate 2 made of aluminum, etc., an electret material layer 3 made of, for example, ''Teflon '' or ''Mylar '' is provided to obtain a tapelike or discoid recording medium 1. When a digital signal D, such as a video signal and an audio signal, applied between a conductive substrate 2 and a recording electrode 4 has an enough voltage to polarize the electret material layer 3 completely, the polarization of a charging voltage by the charge application recording of the electret material is held semipermanently. An analog signal, when applied, is converted through an analog digital converter 5 into a digital signal, which is applied to a recording electrode 4. During reproduction, a reproduced signal is obtained by a reproducing electrode by utilizing variation in electrostatic capacity between the electrode and the conductive substrate 2.
