Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the title resin free of macroparticles, reduced in a dispersion of particle diameters and high in a degree of acetalization, by gently reacting PVA with acetaldehyde at low temperature in an aqueous phase in the presence of an acidic catalyst and keeping it at high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A polyvinyl acetoacetal resin is produced by keeping 2mol. of PVA and about 0.7W2.2mol. of acetaldehyde at 8W17°C for at least 30min in an aqueous phase in the presence of 4W10wt.% acidic catalyst (e.g., hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid or nitric acid), thereby allowing the acetalization of PVA to proceed gently to precipitate partially acetalized PVA, and keeping this reaction system at 25W40°C. According to the above process, a product free of macroparticles and having a low dispersion of particle diameters and a high degree of acetalization of, preferably, 70mol.% or higher can be produced.
