Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a fine polyimide powder of excellent moldability, by adding a specified poor solvent for a polyamic acid and an aliphatic acid anhydride to a polyamic acid solution and dehydrating the polyamic acid to cause ring closure.
CONSTITUTION: A polyamic acid solution is obtained by dissolving a polyamic acid (a) mainly consisting of repeating units of the formula (wherein Ar is a tetravalent aromatic residue containing at least one six-membered carbocyclic ring, and Ar' is a bivalent aromatic or aliphatic residue) in an amide solvent (b) (e.g., N,N-dimethylacetamide). To this solution are added 1.0W5.0pts. vol., per, pt. vol. component (b), poor solvent (c) for component (a) of a solubility parameter of 9.0W10.0 (Cal/cm3) 1/2 (e.g., acetone) and at least 0.3 equivalent, per equivalent of the amic acid units, of aliphatic acid anhydride (d) (e.g., acetic anhydride). The obtained mixture is dehydrated to cause ring closure at 150°C or below in the presence of a tert. amine catalyst (e.g., pyridine).
