Abstract

PURPOSE: To control contrast in accordance with the outside light quantity by integrally providing a panel that performs any two or more functions, i.e., transparent, translucent and/or opaque, on the back of a planar transmission type display device. CONSTITUTION: The planar transmission type display device 1 is formed with a dot matrix transmission type thin film EL display panel constituted of a glass substrate 3, ITO transparent electrode 4, EL thin film 5 sandwiched by an insulating layer, and an ITO transparent electrode 6, with a panel 2 formed with a liquid crystal plate making a transparent or opaque change by an electric signal. On the back of the planar transmission type display device 1, the panel 2 is integrally stuck that performs two or more functions, transparent, translucent and/or opaque, by an electric signal; therefore, the luminance can be raised on the display surface by turning off a power source to the panel 2 and shielding light from the outside (back face); and conversely, the luminance can be reduced by turning on the power source and taking in the light from the outside.
