Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a lightweight molded product, having high heat insulating properties and readily convertible into a porous substance, by impregnating curved carbon fibers with a polymer and molding the resultant impregnated prepreg. CONSTITUTION:Curved carbon fibers are impregnated with a polymer and the resultant prepreg is then molded. The curved carbon fibers have bulky characteristics and are referred to as fibers capable of providing >=200ml/g specific volume at 500 aspect ratio when a sample is placed in a 500ml beaker so to fill the volume thereof and measurement is made under 10g/cm<2> pressure. The difference in specific volume from straight carbon fibers is remarkable at >=50 aspect ratio. The content of the impregnated polymer is preferably within the range of 20-50wt.% and a low-density molded product having about 0.06g/cm<3> density can be obtained.
