Abstract

본 발명은 저장 장치의 저장 매체에 대한 자기저항성 헤드(magnetoresistive(MR) head)를 위치지정하는 방법 및 장치에 관한 것이다. MR 헤드는 제1 및 제2 MR 소자를 갖는다. 저장 매체는 MR 헤드와 저장 매체간에 상대적인 이동이 허용되도록 저장 장치내에 장착된다. 저장 매체는 MR 헤드의 제1 및 제2열 응답(thermal response)을 유도(induce)하기 위해 제공된 서보 정보(servo information)를 포함한다. 제어기는 MR 헤드와 접속되고, MR 소자의 제1 및 제2열 응답을 사용하여 MR 헤드와 저장 매체간의 상대적 이동을 제어한다.

Claims (32)

  1. 저장 장치(a storage device)에 있어서, ① 제1 및 제2 MR 소자가 구비된 자기저항성 헤드(a magnetoresistive) (MR) head)와, ② 저장 매체(a storage medium)로서, 상기 MR 헤드와 상기 저장 매체간에 상대적 이동이 허용되도록 장착되고, 상기 MR 소자의 제1 및 제2열 응답(first and second thermal reponses)을 발생하기 위해 제공된 서보 정보를 포함하는 상기 저장 매체와, ③ 상기 MR 헤드에 접속되고, 상기 제1 및 제2열 응답을 사용하여 상기 MR 헤드와 상기 저장 매체간에 상대적 이동을 제공하는데 제공되는 제어기를 포함하는 저장 장치.
  2. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 저장 매체는 자기 디스크(a magnetic disk)를 포함하는 저장 장치.
  3. 제2항에 있어서, 상기 서보 정보는 상기 자기 디스크의 표면 프로파일 변동(surface profile variations)을 포함하는 저장 장치.
  4. 제3항에 있어서, 상기 디스크는 상기 표면 프로파일 변동에 의해 분리되는 트랙(tracks)을 포함하는 저장 장치.
  5. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2MR 소자는 서로 인접하여 위치되는 저장 장치.
  6. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 제어기는 상기 제1 및 제2열 신호로부터 발생된 열 위치 에러신호(a thermal position error signal(PES))에 응답하는 저장 장치.
  7. 제6항에 있어서, 상기 열 위치 에러 신호는 선형 신호(a linear signal)인 저장 장치.
  8. 제7항에 있어서, 상기 열 위치 에러 신호(PES)는 다음과 같은 수식 즉, PES= 의 수식(여기서, t1은 상기 제1열 응답 신호의 함수를 나타내고, t2는 상기 제2열 응답 신호의 함수를 나타냄)에 의해 결정되는 저장 장치.
  9. 제6항에 있어서, 상기 위치 에러 신호를 발생하는 복조기 및 적응적 보정기(a demodulator and adaptive calibrator)를 포함하는 저장 장치.
  10. 두개의 MR 소자가 구비된 자기저항성(MR) 헤드를 갖는 저장 장치와, 상기 MR 소자에서 유도된 열 신호에 응답하여 상기 MR 헤드를 위치지정하는 서보 제어 시스템(a servo control system)에 사용하는 디스크에 있어서, 트랙 표시기(track markers)에 의해 분리되는 다수의 트랙으로서, 상기 트랙 표시기는 상기 서보 시스템에 의해 열적으로 검출가능한, 상기 다수의 트랙을 포함하는 디스크.
  11. 제10항에 있어서, 상기 트랙 표시기는 지형 변동(topographical variations)을 포함하는 디스크.
  12. 제11항에 있어서, 상기 지형 변동은 원주형 홈(circumferential grooves)을 포함하는 디스크.
  13. 제10항에 있어서, 상기 트랙 표시기는 상기 트랙의 열 방사율(thermal emissivity)과 다른 열 열 방사율을 갖는 디스크.
  14. 제10항에 있어서, 상기 트랙 표시기를 교차(intersect)하는 섹터 표시기(sector markers)를 더 포함하고, 각각이 상기 섹터 표시기의 적어도 일부는 열적으로 검출가능한 디스크.
  15. 제14항에 있어서, 상기 섹터 표시기는 방사형 홈(radial grooves)인 디스크.
  16. 제10항에 있어서, 보정 트랙(a calibration track)으로서, 상기 MR 소자가 상기 보정 트랙 상의 중심에 위치될 때 상기 MR 소자가 상기 트랙 표시기를 검출할 수 없을만큼 충분한 넓이의 폭을 갖는, 상기 보정 트랙을 더 포함하는 디스크.
  17. 제16항에 있어서, 열 검출하는데 충분한 넓이의 상기 보정 트랙폭을 갖는 섹터 표시기를 더 포함하는 디스크.
  18. 제15항에 있어서, 상기 섹터 표시기는 50-100 미크론(microns)의 상기 보정 트랙의 폭을 갖는 디스크.
  19. 한쌍의 MR 소자가 구비된 자기 저항성(MR) 헤드를 위치지정하는 방법에 있어서, ① 상기 MR 소자에서 제1 및 제2열 신호를 유도(induce)하는 단계와, ② 상기 제1 및 제2 열 신호에 응답하여 상기 MR 헤드를 이동시키는 단계를 포함하는 자기저항성 헤드 위치지정 방법.
  20. 제19항에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2 열 신호에 기초하여 위치 에러 신호(PES 신호)를 발생하는 단계를 더 포함하고, 상기 MR 헤드의 상기 이동 단계는 상기 PES 신호에 응답하여 수행되는 자기저항성 헤드 위치지정 방법.
  21. 제20항에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2열 신호를 보정하는 단계를 더 포함하고, 상기 이동 단계는 상기 보정된 제1 및 제2열 신호에 응답하는 자기저항성 헤드 위치저장 방법.
  22. 제20항에 있어서, 상기 이동 단계는 액츄에이터(an actuator)를 상기 PES 신호에 응답하는 구동기와 구동하는 단계를 더 포함하는 자기저항성 헤드 위치지정 방법.
  23. 제19항에 있어서, ① 상기 MR 소자에서 제1 및 제2자기 신호(first and second magnetic signals)를 유도하는 단계와, ② 상기 제1 및 제2자기 신호에 응답하여 스핀들 모터(a spindle motor)를 구동(drive)시키는 단계를 포함하는 자기저항성 헤드 위치지정 방법.
  24. 제23항에 있어서, 상기 구동 단계는 상기 제1 및 제2자기 신호로부터 차분 타이밍 신호(a differential timing signal)를 발생하는 단계를 더 포함하는 자기저항성 헤드 위치지정 방법.
  25. 제23항에 있어서, 상기 제1 및 제2자기 신호는 데이타 채널(a data channel) 사용에 의해 처리되는 자기저항성 헤드 위치지정 방법.
  26. 적어도 하나의 디스크 및 적어도 하나의 MR 헤드를 갖는 저장 시스템에서 MR 헤드의 두개의 자기저항성(MR) 소지의 열 감응성(thermal sensitivity)을 보정(calibrate)하는 방법에 있어서, ① 상기 MR 헤드를 보정 트랙에 이동시키는 단계와, ② 상기 MR 소자에서 제1 및 제2 열 신호를 유도하는 단계와, ③ 상기 제1 및 제2 열 신호가 동일하도록 상기 제1 및 제2 열 신호의 이득을 조정하는 단계를 포함하는 열 감응성 보정 방법.
  27. 제26항에 있어서, 상기 유도 단계는 상기 보정된 트랙 주위에 제공된 섹터 표시기상에 상기 MR 헤드를 통과시키는 단계를 포함하는 열 감응성 보정 방법.
  28. 제26항에 있어서, 상기 열 신호의 제1 및 제2 피크 진폭(first and second peak amplitudes)을 결정(determine)하는 단계를 더 포함하고, 상기 조정 단계를 상기 제1 및 제2 피크 진폭의 이득을 조정하는 단계를 포함하는 열 감응성 보정 방법.
  29. 제26항에 있어서, 보정을 위해 MR 헤드를 선택하는 단계를 더 포함하는 열 감응성 보정 방법.
  30. 제26항에 있어서, 상기 조정 단계는 승산기(muitipliers)에 의해 상기 제1 및 제2 열 신호를 승산하는 단계를 포함하고, 상기 승산기는 랜덤 액세스 메모리(a random access memory)에 저장되는 열 감응성 보정 방법.
  31. 제26항에 있어서, ① 제1트랙의 인덱스 표시기를 식별하는 단계와, ② 제2디스크의 인덱스 표시기를 식별하는 단계와, ③ 상기 제1디스크 인덱스 표시기 식별과 상기 제2디스크 엔덱스 표시기 식별간의 시간차를 측정(measure)하는 단계를 더 포함하는 열 감응성 보정 방법.
  32. 제31항에 있어서, 상기 식별 단계 및 상기 측정 단계는 상기 유도 단계와 동시에 수행되는 열 감응성 보정 방법.
